The Fallout video game franchise is getting a TV adaptation! It had been announced last year that Amazon Studios partnered with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks to develop the Fallout TV series for Prime Video, with Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Kilter Films being part of the project. Just like Arcane, the Netflix show produced by both the streaming site and Riot Games, the Fallout series will be produced by Amazon Studios with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks. We hope that the series is just as good, if not better, and does justice to the games!
Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner have signed on as the TV adaption's showrunners. A couple of months ago, Todd Howard, Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, confirmed that the show is still in development during a Reddit Q&A celebrating the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Anniversary Edition. Howard wrote on Reddit: Moving ahead. Really excited to be working with Jonah, Lisa, and Amazon on it.
Robertson-Dworet previously served as one of the scriptwriters on Captain Marvel, while Wagner was a co-executive producer on Silicon Valley. Robertson-Dworet is also known for her work on the screenplay for the 2018 Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander. Wagner’s past works include Portlandia, Baskets, and The Office. Nolan has been confirmed to direct the premiere episode, slated to enter production sometime this year, according to Deadline. Nolan had previously directed the pilot of HBO’s Westworld, which he co-created and executive produced with Joy. “Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said in July 2020. “Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

The game franchise is incredibly popular, even bagging dozens of Game of the Year awards, while its mobile game, Fallout Shelter, has been downloaded more than 170 million times. Fallout is a post-apocalyptic, retro-futuristic series of role-playing games which follows several protagonists across centuries helping people rebuild society in a world that was devastated by nuclear war in the year 2077. According to Variety, the first game was released way back in 1997. More recently, the prequel Fallout 76, the latest installment in the franchise, was released in 2018.
