'High School of the Dead,' also known as 'Apocalyptic Academy: High School of the Dead,' is a Japanese Horror anime based on the manga of the same name. It was created by Daisuke Sato, and Shoji Sato does the illustrations. The anime's publication was done in Fuji Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age, from September 2006 to May 2013, but the work was not entirely finished after Daisuke Sato passed away in 2017. Seven Tankobon volumes were published by Fuji Shobo and Kadokawa Shoten from March 2007 to April 2011 in Japan. Yen Press publishes the anime series in North America. 

The first anime adaptation of this manga was taken in 2011, and fans widely loved it. In fact, the series was so popular that it is regarded as one of the most popular Television Anime series even to this day.

Is 'Highschool Of The Dead' Season 2 Happening?

It's unfortunate that even though 'High School of the Dead' was a brilliant anime series, it has not been renewed for a second season yet. The first season was broadcast from July 5 to September 20, 2010. An original video animation special episode was released in the same year for the fans, but nothing has been reported since then. Fans have been waiting eagerly for more than a decade to hear about the second season, but the show faces several challenges compared to others. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the series will return for a second season due to the manga creator's death in 2017, leaving the manga unfinished. However, there is still hope that a new writer could be appointed, which could lead to a second season in 2024.

It has been speculated that the decision has come after a devastating tsunami and earthquakes hit Japan. Hence, there was no appropriate time and resources to take the series forward. There have been a lot of foreign networks that own the rights to the first season of the series, and the series has a huge fan following. Some of the networks that own the rights are VOD, Sentai Filmworks, Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, and Madman Entertainment in Australia.

What Is The Primary Storyline Of The Anime?

The plot of this Japanese Horror Anime mainly revolves around an apocalyptic catastrophe that raises the dead. The Zombie outbreak happens after a mysterious disease starts spreading in Japan and all over the world. Because of the disease, humans started dying catastrophically and then became zombies. Humans are being decimated at an alarming rate, and the disease keeps spreading faster and faster. The show focuses on a group of youngsters who try to protect each other and survive the apocalypse.

Are There Any Rumors Surrounding The Second Season Of 'High School Of The Dead?

There have been a lot of rumors revolving around the series. One of the ongoing rumors suggests that a US-based anime network will produce the second season. But, the Japanese authorities are a little apprehensive about the entire situation, and they are giving it a second thought. Another rumor suggested that the fans won't have to wait too long for the second season, and it will air by the end of 2020. But that clearly didn't happen because that date has long gone. Some earlier reports indicated that the anime has already been in the works for a while, but there have been no official news or announcements in this case. Some ardent fans are also confident that the second season of the series will air sooner than we know, and a 2-minute trailer for the second season will begin streaming pretty soon. 

Main Characters Of 'High School Of The Dead'

Even though there are a lot of characters in this popular anime, we will be discussing the primary characters and the roles they have played in the first season. Below, we have provided a short description of each of the main characters.

Takashi Komuro- He is the 17-year-old protagonist of the series and goes to Fujimi High school. Takashi and Rei are childhood friends who made a pact to get married when they grow up. But, since their decision was taken in haste and they were immature, Rei, later on, starts dating Hisashi. At the very start of the series, he notices that the zombies are attacking the teachers, and he rushed to help Rei, who was helping the teachers. Unfortunately, during the fight, Hishashi turns into a zombie, and Takashi kills him. This makes Rei believe that Takashi killed him out of jealousy. As Takashi proceeds to leave after the incident, Rei holds him back and apologizes, and the two of them hug each other.

Rei Miyamoto- Rei is described to be a girl with orange-brown hair and reddish-brown eyes. She is Takashi's classmate, and before the series started, she promised Takashi to marry him, but later, she begins dating Hishashi. After Takashi kills Hishahi because the former turned into a zombie, she gets really upset and blames Takashi for everything. Takashi, feeling bad about the entire situation, proceeds to leave, but Rei stops him, and they both reconcile. In the 12th chapter, Rei tells Takashi that girls fall for guys who are adorable and care for their partners. Hearing this, Takashi tells her that he's neither of the two, but Rei proceeds to tell him that that is exactly why she likes him and does not want him to be anyone else. She also hates Mr. Shido since he held her back for a year at school and caused problems between her and her father.

Saeko Busujima- Saeko is a third-year student described as having dark violet hair and bright blue eyes, She is the president of the school's Kendo club, and she always carries a wooden sword with her. Saeko takes a lot of pride in her skills, and in the series, she is shown to kill an infected student out of mercy. Later in the series, it is shown that Saeko confides in Takashi that she was once almost sexually assaulted, but she was able to fight back with the help of her wooden sword before the police came. She struggles with the violent side of her character and even considers giving up to the zombies before Takashi helps her regain her confidence.

Saya Takagi- Saya is a second-year student in the same high school, and she is the daughter of an influential right-winged politician. She is a self-proclaimed genius who uses her knowledge to help a group of people to escape from harm. Even though she comes from an affluent family, she hates her parents, but later on, reconciles with them during their family estate raid.

Kohta Hirno- He is a 16-year-old student who, on the surface, seems to be just a wimpy, overweight guy with glasses, but secretly, he is a gun enthusiast. Later in the series, he develops feelings for office trainee Asami Nakoaka after helping her to subdue an angry mall survivor. But, their friendship is short-lived as Asami becomes a zombie, and Kohta had to kill her. 

Shizuka Marikawa- Shizuka is a nurse at the high school who is nearly killed by a zombie and is saved by Saeko. She has a charming personality, and her large bust size is often served as a comical relief in the series. 

Alice Maresato- Alice is a 7-year-old girl who is rescued by Takashi after her father is killed when they were denied shelter. In the English dub of the anime, she goes by the name of Arisu.
