After winning the award for the Best Longform Video on MTV's Video Music Awards, the singer announced after a long hiatus that a new album is coming.
Slam the breaks, folks. Taylor Swift just announced a brand new original album called Midnights after almost two years. While the last two years have been eventful with the re-release of albums like Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), this announcement is exciting because it means Swift is ready to usher her fans into a whole new era spanning music, visual aesthetic, the palette and the merchandise. Here’s everything we know so far about the album titled Midnights.
In Swift’s Instagram post, the singer details how the songs will be about “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout” her life. She also writes about how the album is about meeting ourselves after tossing and turning every midnight. It is expected to be emotional and one of Swift’s most heartbreaking albums.
While her team hasn’t released the name of any tracks, the cover Swift has posted on Instagram shows 13 tracks in total with 6 on Side A and 7 on Side B. Many have speculated that artists like The 1975, Lana Del Ray and Stevie Nicks may be featured in the album.
The cover art features Swift in her classic blond bob holding a lighter and sporting a bright blue eyeshadow with a winged liner. The white space surrounding the picture features the title of the album while the bottom left will probably feature the names of the tracks currently unannounced.
While fans can order the original Moonstone edition of the vinyl, Swift has also provided multiple iterations of the cover and the vinyl including Midnights: Jade Green Edition Vinyl, Midnights: Blood Moon Edition Vinyl and Midnights: Mahogany Edition Vinyl. These have different cover arts, different colour palettes and even different coloured records ranging from marbled orange and red to jade green and finally a woody brown colour. This was only available for the one week it was announced in. Sales will probably close in two days.
Billboard reported that the album is very well within its potential to top charts for a while. If Midnights reaches at No.1 on the Billboard 200, she will be tying with Barbara Streisand for the most No.1 albums by a female artist. Overall, she will also be tying in third place with Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and Drake to have their albums reach No.1. The Beatles (with 19 albums) and Jay-Z (with 14) have surpassed the 11 number mark.
Apart from the artists' speculation, it is also speculated that the album may be rock. However, fans have definitely inferred that the album will not be a pop album. Additionally, on the Jade Green edition, the cover art is rumored to feature her Debut album, Taylor Swift record, ushering a wave of theories of her rerecording the debut album.
Sit tight and pull out the tissues because Midnights is scheduled to drop on October 21st, 2022, midnight.
