Ethan Hawke Horror 'The Black Phone': Release Date, Plot, Cast, Trailer, And More

Derrickson is best known for directing 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', 'Sinister' and 'Doctor Strange'.

Scott Derrickson's latest horror flick is here, and once again, it stars Ethan Hawke. The Black Phone is the director's first film since Doctor Strange, which released in 2016. You might remember his popular horror films from the past, including: The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister, the latter of which starred Ethan Hawke. This time Hawke is seen in the movie's trailer, appearing with white face paint and a top hat. Hawke wears a number of terrifying masks and taunts an abducted boy played by Mason Thames with stories of previous victims and his own childhood. And it sure is creepy as heck!

According to Variety, in a pre-taped speech for the exhibitors, Hawke said that Blumhouse founder Jason Blum had previously called Sinister the "scariest movie he'd ever worked on," but The Black Phone has now taken its spot. That sure is saying a lot!

What Is The Plot Of 'The Black Phone'?

The plot follows a serial killer known as The Grabber who hunts down young kids. The movie is set in the 1970s in the suburbs of Colorado. The Grabber disguised as a magician abducts a young boy Finney Shaw and places him in a soundproof basement. There's an old disconnected black phone that might just be more than what it seems!  The story follows the abducted boy "locked in a basement that's stained with the blood of half a dozen other murdered children. In the cellar with him is an antique telephone, long since disconnected, but which rings at night with calls from the dead," according to a synopsis.

Will the young boy be able to flee from the sinister Grabber?  The movie is reportedly based on the 2004 short story of the same name written by Joe Hill, the son of iconic horror author Stephen King, reports Collider.

Who Is Cast In 'The Black Phone'?

It'll be interesting to watch Hawke play the unhinged serial killer the Grabber. Hawke played a father whose daughter becomes enamored by a murderous deity known as Bughuul in the film Sinister (also directed by Derrickson) which is said to be one of the scariest movies of all time.  James Ransone, who also worked with Derrickson on Sinister, will be featured in the film as well.  Protagonist Finney Shaw will be played by newcomer Mason Thames. Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, and Madeleine McGraw co-star.
