Netflix has announced the adaptation of the classic novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence. They will be joining Sony’s 3000 Pictures for the female-focused re-telling of the story. Emma Corrin, the breakout star from Netflix's hit series The Crown, who portrayed Princess Diana on screen, has already been cast to play the lead role.
The novel was a subject of much controversy at the time of its initial release and was a target for obscenity trials in United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Japan. But it has since then been adapted into a number of films, TV shows, and has also been dramatized. Here's everything we know so far about the latest adaptation of the novel.
The film will be based on the novel, which is said to be a story well ahead of its time. It follows the life of Lady Chatterley, an upper-class woman born to a life of wealth and privilege. She is married to Sir Clifford Chatterley who is a Baronet, paralyzed from the waist down. The Lady soon finds herself falling out of love with her husband and starts an extramarital affair with the gamekeeper on their English estate. She soon realizes that she cannot live without desire, intimacy, and not just intellectual attraction. After she has fallen heart and soul, she decides to break all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.
Golden Globe Winner Emma Corrin has already been cast as the lead in the film. She will be joined by BAFTA Rising Star Award Winner Jack O’Connell (‘71, Unbroken, Godless) and Matthew Duckett (Tartuffe, My Left/Right Foot - The Musical.)
The film will be directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang, Mrs. America, The Act) and Academy Award nominee David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) will be writing the screenplay.
The film will be produced by Academy Award nominee Laurence Mark (Jerry McGuire, Dreamgirls, The Greatest Showman) and Academy Award nominees Pete Czernin & Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.) Marisa Paiva and Nikki Cooper will oversee the project for 3000 Pictures.
The official release date for the film has not yet been confirmed but it may be released in 2022.
Production for the film has already begun with a major part of the filming taking place in the UK. The team has been spotted shooting near the iconic Lake Vyrnwy in North Wales as well as around Snowdonia, the UK’s highest mountain range.
