Acclaimed actor Eddie Redmayne has expresed his wish to play the role of Batman Villain in any upcoming movie of the franchise.
The 'Fantastic Beasts' actor for his next role, said he’d be up for jumping into Gotham and taking on the Caped Crusader. For Redmayne, becoming a part of the comic book universe whether it’s Marvel or DC, can be like being sucked into a black hole and this stands true for any actor. You will have no idea as to why or what is happening and you will also not be able to guess when you will not be a part of the universe.
Ryan Reynolds, for example, had a hard time of it firstly as Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, then as Green Lantern in Green Lantern, but, as they say, third time's the charm, he found a firm footing while playing the role of Deadpool. The same cannot quite be said for the cast of the Suicide Squad. But sadly, there are not many successful stories, especially now. A cameo, in a Marvel film, Jeff Goldblum in Thor: Ragnarok for example, can be great, but if an actor takes up a comic book role so entirely it doesn’t matter what universe they’re in, it just seems to work.
Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne has thrown his hat to play the role of another iconic Batman Villain. Last seen being portrayed by the inimitable Jim Carrey, who has outshone everyone in Batman Forever, Redmayne recently revealed he wants to play The Riddler. While speaking at IMDb at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, when asked what ‘supervillain’ he’d like to play, he quickly responded, saying, "‘I’d like to play The Riddler, just putting that out there."
Joaquin Phoenix's highly acclaimed movie 'Joker' hitting cinemas next month, and Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman coming in the next year or two, it is safe to say that the DC Universe is taking a turn into the darker side and Redmayne seems to be a part of that journey. It is not known yet if it is going to be a standalone story or whether his Riddler will be cast as Batman’s next adversary, but after playing the role of Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts, it would be interesting to see Redmayne take on the criminal mastermind that is Edward Nygma/The Riddler.
It is also not been announced yet who will play Pattinson’s counterpart, if there even is one, in his upcoming Batman trilogy, but there has to be a supervillain vacancy on the horizon and we sure hope it is Eddie Redmayne playing the role. And if it is the case, we will see what Jim Carrey has to say.
