'Dungeons & Dragons' Movie: Release Date, Plot, Cast, Production Status, And More.

The game may just be revived and brought to the forefront of popular culture now with this star-studded movie that is in the works.

Dungeons & Dragons has so often been portrayed as part of "nerd culture." It was always a game associated with the supposedly "uncool" kid in high school who would be decked out in a cloak and made fun of by the other kids. The role-playing game, which first came out in 1974, however, has gone from being on the margins and being dubbed as nerdy to making its way into popular culture in a big way. Some of the players of the game include actors Vin Diesel and Robin Williams, comedian Stephen Colbert, and professional basketball player Tim Duncan.

The game may just be revived and brought to the forefront of popular culture now that there's a movie reboot with an all-star cast in the works.

What Is Dungeons & Dragons?

Going by the official overview of the game, Dungeons & Dragons or D&D is a fantasy role-playing game. As per the website: "The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more. You can also explore the world of Dungeons & Dragons through any of the novels written by its fantasy authors, as well as engaging board games and immersive video games. All of these stories are part of D&D." Fantasy and adventure, what's not to like?

What Will The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Be About?

The latest adaptation of the board game is a renewed effort to bring the world of the fantasy game to the big screen. Cast member, Justice Smith told Collider, of the film, "It doesn't try and be anything that it's not. I think they approached this the same way. I can't spoil too much, but it's action-packed, thrilling, funny as hell… it's all of the things, and yet it has a clear idea." Smith added, "That specificity is key in storytelling, and John and Jonathan do that so well, being like, 'This is the story we're telling, but they're making it enjoyable the entire time.' This is me not trying to spoil the movie in any regard. I've given away no details."
