Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded adaptation gets a new release date. Find out all the details here.
Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel gets delayed again, but hopefully, this will be the final outing date.
'Dune' is among the most anticipated films of 2021, with a sterling cast, jaw-dropping premise, and stunning visual effects. The movie would've already released a year ago if not for the pandemic.
Villeneuve’s adaptation promises to be as faithful to the source material as possible. Here is everything we know about the film, including release date, plot, cast, trailer, and more.
'Dune' will premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, and then release in theaters and HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
The release date for 'Dune' got shuffled numerous times. Filming for 'Dune' began in early 2019, with the release date initially set for December 18, 2020. But just as like most films that were supposed to come out last year, the Coronavirus pandemic delayed Dune's release date to October 1, 2021. However, in June 2021, Warner Bros decided to switch the release dates for their upcoming films. They decided to give the October 1 slot to the Sopranos New Line feature prequel 'The Many Saints of Newark' and put 'Dune' on an October 22 schedule.
'Dune' follows Paul Atreides, a young noble from the planet Caladan. He belongs to one of the influential clans or "houses" that are fighting to gain control over the planet Arrakis, also known as "Dune." Arrakis is a special planet because of the presence of a powerful and mysterious drug called “spice melange." The powerful spice allows you to peek into the future, travel across space, and prolong life. The House Harkonnen rules over the sought-after planet.
When Paul inherited the planet Arrakis, the House Harkonnen immediately becomes his enemy. Paul is believed to be the Kwisatz Haderach, the messiah who will both unite and somehow destroy the universe.
While on the planet Arrakis, Paul's family experiences a crushing loss. Paul eventually finds himself living and working with the planet's Fremen, standing up against the villainous House Harkonnen.
The original book consists of 412 pages. Because of its length, 'Dune' will be split into two movies. The sequel is not officially announced yet, but screenwriter Eric Roth has already started working on the script for the second film. As of the moment, we still do not know when the first 'Dune' movie will find a stopping point based on the book, although there are rumors that it will conclude with Paul and Jamis' fight.
The upcoming 2021 film is not the first attempt to adapt Frank Herbert’s novel. There has been a 1984 film by David Lynch, two connected miniseries from Sci-Fi Channel: 'Dune' (2000) and 'Children of Dune' (2003), and Alejandro Jodorowsky's 1975 film adaptation that never came into fruition.
'Dune' has a star-studded cast list led by Call Me By Your Name's Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides. Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson portray his parents Leto Atreides and Lady Jessica.
Avengers: Infinity War's Josh Brolin will play Gurney Halleck, while Army of the Dead's Dave Bautista will star as Glossu Rabban. Thor's Stellan Skarsgård stars as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, while Aquaman's Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho. Also on the list is No Country for Old Men star Javier Bardem as Stilgar and Spider-Man: Far From Home's Zendaya as Chani.
Jon Spaihts, Denis Villeneuve, and Eric Roth wrote the screenplay for the film.
