‘Dracula Untold’ Part 2: Everything We Know So Far

Dracula Untold was a 2014 dark fantasy action film. It served as a reboot of the 1931 Dracula film series which is based on the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The film was directed by Gary Shore in what was his feature film debut.

Dracula Untold narrates the origin story of the mythical Dracula who is the monster alter ego of historical figure Vlad III “the Impaler” Drăculea. The film did pretty well commercially but did not receive a lot of positive reactions at the time. Over time, the reactions became mixed and fans of the story wanted to see more.

Will There Be Dracula Untold 2?

Much before the first film was released, it was supposed to be directed by Alex Proyas with Avatar’s Sam Worthington in the lead. But due to budgeting issues, the project was shelved and later, Shore took over. It has been nearly a decade since Dracula Untold was released. The film can be considered a commercial success and Luke Evans who starred as Dracula also received rave reviews for his performance. Ever since the film was released, there have been talks of a possible series of movies.

The earlier version of the film was followed by several sequels and spin-offs. The 1931 Dracula film was followed by Dracula’s Daughter in 1936, which served as a direct sequel, and Son of Dracula in 1943. The Count returned to life in three more Universal films in the mid-1940s including House of Frankenstein (1944), House of Dracula (1945), and the comedy Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). Universal released several horror films following this.

As early as 2016, Universal President Donna Langley had said that they were working on new versions of Van Helsing, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Wolfman. They were planning a crossover event like the Avengers of monsters. “There have been talks and conversations. I think the bigger picture is exciting for all the monsters that they own,” Evans had stated. “There is talk about it. I just don’t know how it will all manifest itself. I think it will happen and I think they’re just working out how these monsters interact and how they end up in the same realm with each other. If they can stick Captain America in a scene with Iron Man and Thor, I think you can definitely put Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, The Mummy, and Dracula in the same film as well.”

Evans was supposed to be a part of The Mummy (2017) starring Tom Cruise to be included in the “Dark Universe” but he was not in it. “I think we have a plan for Dracula that may be a little different than the kind of story that was told in Dracula Untold,” The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman stated. “So, anything’s possible, but I think we have a slightly different idea for Dracula in mind.” So while there may not be a sequel, a different sort of follow-up movie is in the works at Universal. The Mummy has already laid the groundwork for future Dark Universe crossovers. But unfortunately, Universal has announced that it has cancelled the Dark Universe so it seems rather unlikely for us to see more of Dracula Untold.
