Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor will be featuring in three specials spread across the following year.
Doctor Who: Flux is the thirteenth installment of the sci-fi series that started airing on October 31 this year. A new episode releases every Sunday, and so far, there have been four new episodes released out of the six planned episodes for the latest season. This season is set to air up to December 5. Even before the season could come to an end, the Doctor Who Specials have been announced.
Jodie Whittaker returned for her third and final series as the Thirteenth Doctor, along with her traveling companions, Yasmin Khan and Dan Lewis, played by Mandip Gill and John Bishop, respectively. The trio must navigate a universe-ending anomaly called the "Flux" while also dealing with enemies and secrets from the Doctor's past. This is what you can expect from the Specials in 2022.
Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor will be featuring in three specials. The specials will be spread across the following year, with the first one premiering on New Year's Day. Collider has reported that the second special will be a feature-length special that will air in the spring. The final special episode concluding Whittaker's journey as the Doctor is set to premiere in the fall of 2022, during a celebration of the BBC's 100th anniversary.
In the festive special, we follow the story of Sarah, who owns and runs ELF storage, and Nick, a customer who visits his storage unit every year on New Year's Eve. But this year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned. The episode will star Aisling Bea (This Way Up) as Sarah and Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black) as Nick. It will also feature Pauline McLynn (Father Ted). "The Thirteenth Doctor and friends will kick-start 2022 with an action-packed spectacular episode set to air on BBC One on New Year's Day," BBC had stated.
There is little to nothing known about what we can expect from the spring and fall specials yet. But the New Year's Special along with the spring special was filmed simultaneously with the 13th season. The final special was filmed only in October.
The New Year's special will be airing on January 1, 2022, on BBC, where you can also watch the remaining episodes of the current season.
It has also been reported by Comicbook that former showrunner Russell T. Davies, who initially launched the "New Who" era in 2005, will be returning for the show's 60th anniversary season in 2023. "I'm beyond excited to be back on my favorite show," Davies had to say about his return. "But we're time-traveling too fast, there's a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I'm still a viewer for now." The next Doctor has not been revealed yet by BBC.
