Disney's Snow White Reboot Delayed Following Contoversial Backlash

Disney delays the Snow White remake due to controversial backlash. The 2025 release follows criticism from fans and even the original director's son.

Snow White Reboot

Disney has decided to delay the release of its highly anticipated remake of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." The decision to push back the film's release comes in the wake of a controversial backlash from Disney fans and some key figures associated with the original 1937 classic.

The upcoming musical fantasy film, directed by Marc Webb and featuring a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, has been the center of attention due to its deviation from the beloved original storyline. Disney enthusiasts have expressed their concerns about the remake, with some feeling that it strays too far from the classic narrative.

Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular character in the remake, recently made remarks during an interview with Extra TV that added fuel to the fire. She voiced her opinion on the original 1937 plot, describing it as a love story where "a guy who literally stalks" Snow White, characterizing the movie as "weird." Zegler emphasized that the story's context had changed since 1937, and Snow White would no longer be portrayed as a damsel in distress waiting to be saved by a prince.

Zegler's comments prompted an online backlash, with one fan of the original movie expressing disappointment: "Rachel Zegler admitting she didn't like Snow White growing up, saying she had only watched it ONCE before getting the role is so sad to me. Out of MILLIONS of women who loved the character, care about the story and yet this is who we get."

However, there were others who came to Zegler's defense, pointing out that she should not face such scrutiny for expressing her views on the movie. One supporter wrote, "Miss Rachel Zegler should not be in such hot water over saying Snow White wasn’t ahead of its time (true), it wasn’t a childhood favorite of hers (honest), and the remake is going to attempt more feminism (something I think ALL of the other live-action princesses have said??)."

The controversy doesn't end there. David Hand, the son of the original movie's director, expressed his strong disapproval of the remake in an interview with The Telegraph. He stated, "I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it." Hand went on to voice his concerns about Disney's approach to its classic films, accusing the company of making radical changes to the stories and characters and introducing what he referred to as "new woke things." He added, "I find it quite frankly a bit insulting that they may have done with some of these classic films. There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did... I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves."

In response to the growing controversy and criticism, Disney has decided to delay the release of the Snow White remake. The film was originally slated for release on March 22, 2024. However, in a statement issued on October 27, 2023, Disney announced that the new expected release date is March 21, 2025. The company did not provide a specific reason for the delay, but it has been speculated that it may be related to the ongoing actors' strike, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

This decision to postpone the release is significant and indicates Disney's awareness of the concerns raised by fans and figures associated with the original movie. It remains to be seen how this delay and the controversy surrounding the remake will impact the final product and the reception it receives when it finally hits the screens in 2025.
