‘Derry Girls’ Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

Derry Girls is the British sitcom created and written by Lisa McGee. The series first premiered in 2018 and was almost an instant hit. The show is inspired by McGee’s own childhood growing up in Derry during the Troubles, which was the conflict generally considered to have begun when the city’s Catholic majority protested against Protestant political rule in 1969, sparking the Battle of Bogside, as per The Guardian.

The series follows the lives of five teenagers — Clare Devlin (Nicola Coughlan), Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), Orla McCool (Louisa Harland), and James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) in Derry, Northern Ireland, who attend a Catholic girls’ school and the many exciting misadventures they get in the midst of a national conflict. The show has three seasons and has received high critical acclaim, and is also well-loved by the viewers. Here’s what you need to know about the future of the show:

Will There Be Season 4 Of Derry Girls?

Renewal Status: Ended

The latest season of the show premiered on 12 April 2022 with six episodes concluded on 17 May 2022. A bonus special extended episode of 45 minutes was released on 18 May 2022 and served as the final episode of the series. It was confirmed in 2020 that a third season set in 1996 and 1997 would be happening. It was also announced that this would be the final season of the series. The release of the season was delayed due to the pandemic, with production wrapping up only in December 2021.

McGee said that her decision to end the successful series was because she believed the story she wanted to tell had been “completed.” She added, “So many shows get canceled after one series or, you know or have any writer feeling a lot of pressure, a kind of too many cooks thing. I never had that, I was always sort of given a lot of freedom with Derry Girls. So it’s really been a complete joy to take these characters on this journey and not have it interfered with, it’s been really pure. I don’t know if I’ll ever have this experience again.”

She mentioned how the ending of the series was “a love letter to the people who shaped me” and also confirmed that she had planned on Derry Girls being a three-season series all along. Fans need not fret because McGee has given us a ray of hope by mentioning the chance of a reboot and even a spin-off. “You never know what will happen in 10 years’ time, but as a writer, you just know when it’s complete. I’ll miss them, but I feel like I got to take those characters exactly where I wanted to take them,” she stated, adding, “I definitely think [there’s a potential for a spin-off about] the mums and those maybe older characters… There are so many, like, generations and stuff on it.”

Only time will tell if an older version of the Derry Girls will be coming back.
