Derry Girls season 3 was officially announced last year, but where is it now?
This article was recently reviewed and is up to date as of September 10, 2020.
It's been more than a year since fans were treated to a sweet announcement regarding the renewal of Derry Girls for season 3, and fans are already wondering what happened.
The popular and award-winning British sitcom conceived and written by Lisa McGee was officially renewed by Channel 4 just right after its last season 2 episode aired on April 9 last year.
We are now almost all the way through 2020 with no news about the Derry Girls. Where are the Derry Girls? Is season 3 only delayed, or worse canceled?
Here are the latest updates we know about Derry Girls season 3.
As early as last year, fans already predicted that the third season would premiere in April or May this year. Unfortunately, this didn't come true. Fans will even have to wait longer than expected.
Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin in the British show, talked to The Sun regarding the current status of the series.
The actress shared that the team was supposed to start filming in May. However, their production has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
In the interview, Coughlan shared, "11th of May was our start date [for filming season 3] so it wasn't fun seeing that day come and go without us being there."
The actress also urged everyone to be patient and to rest assured that they are doing the right thing by waiting.
Coughlan also spoke about the show's third season back in June on Angela Scanlon's Thanks A Million podcast. She said: "We were meant to start filming around now. We made the second series back in 2018, so it's been a long time since we've been together filming."
Of course, the sooner they start filming, the sooner fans can get a follow-up season. However, with the recent pandemic's status, it looks like we'll have to wait at least a year more for this to happen.
It is also quite frustrating to note that Channel 4's director of programmes Ian Katz revealed that the new episodes are "quite substantially delayed".
"In comedy, I suppose our biggest frustration has been that Derry Girls has been quite substantially delayed because [out] of pretty much everything we make, it's the hardest thing to make with social distancing," he said at the Edinburgh TV Festival, via Radio Times.
He also added that "it's the most close-up, intimate production".
Derry Girls is a hilarious television series about a group of teenage girls set in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s.
Following the events of the previous installment, there's a huge possibility that season 3 will finally explore the budding romance between James and Erin. The two best friends have shared several sweet moments during the previous seasons. One of the most heartwarming scenes was when Erin was ditched by her prom date and James showed up at her doorstep after hours of waiting.
We can also expect to see more character development between each Derry Girl as they move through their adolescent lives.
The original cast members are most likely to reprise their roles.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson is coming back as Erin Quinn together with Louisa Harland as her cousin Orla.
Fellow Derry Girls Clare (Nicola Coughlan) and Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) are also expected to return. Dylan Llewellyn is also likely to come back as James Maguire together with other cast members Tara Lynne O'Neill as Ma/Mary, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah, Tommy Tiernan as Da/Gerry, Ian McElhinney as Granda Joe, and Leah O'Rourke as Jenny Joyce.
The official trailer is most likely to arrive at least a month before the show premieres. We'll have to wait for more updates on the specific date for now.
