‘Death Note’ continues to be one of the biggest and most successful anime ever created, 17 years since it premiered. ‘Death Note’ is based on a manga series of the same name written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The 37-episode anime television series adaptation was first released in Japan in October 2006 and ran until June 2007. The anime scored an astounding 8.62/10 out of 2,552,062 votes on MyAnimeList. For the longest time, fans have continued to anticipate a second season of the anime series. However, Madhouse, the studio that produced the hit anime, remains tightlipped about the renewal. Is it finally happening? Let’s find out.
Will There Be ‘Death Note’ Season 2?
Renewal Status: Pending
We have been waiting for the sequel to the original ‘Death Note’ anime for so long. There are plenty of speculations that ‘Death Note’ 2 is already on the way. Unfortunately, there is still no official confirmation that a sequel to the original anime is happening. You might be wondering why it took so long for Madhouse to come up with a sequel for the series despite the extreme popularity of the first anime. One of the main reasons is the lack of source material. The manga on which the series is based contains 108 chapters collected in 12 tankÅbon volumes. The anime adaptation has pretty much exhausted the source material already. However, there is new hope for fans! In February 2020, a standalone ‘Death Note: Special One Shot’ written by Ohba and drawn by Obata was published. The standalone was set ten years after the events of Kira, featuring a whole new story to the Death Note franchise. It could be viable source material for an anime sequel.
When Will ‘Death Note’ Season 2 Release?
A second season for the ‘Death Note’ anime is not confirmed yet, so there is still no release date available. We will continue to wait for further news and update this article along the way.
What Is The Possible Plot Of ‘Death Note’ Season 2?
‘Death Note’ season 2 is not confirmed yet. The plot details will remain unknown unless we get the official announcement. However, our best guess is that the second season will most likely adopt ‘Death Note: Special One Shot.’ If that happens, then we can expect a time jump with an entirely new plot and antagonist for season 2. The first adaptation follows the story of Light Yagami, who was given a notebook called the ‘Death Note’ by Shinigami Ryuk after he became bored within the Shinigami world. The names that Light will write in the ‘Death Note’ will die, and Light decides to use it to rid the world of evil, killing one criminal after another. The new possible source material for season 2, ‘Death Note: Special One Shot,’ sees the return of Ryuk to the human world. He approaches Minoru Tanaka, a middle-school student as smart as Light, and offers him the ‘Death Note.’ This time, the world has already installed more preventive measures following the Kira incident ten years ago. Below is the synopsis:
When the Shinigami Ryuk returns to Earth more than ten years after his last visit, he gives the Death Note to the top-scoring student in Japan, hoping that he will follow in Light Yagami’s footsteps. He is surprised when Minoru Tanaka returns the notebook and asks him to return in two years’ time. Now a high school student, Minoru accepts the notebook from Ryuk, but he has no plans to use it himself. With the Shinigami’s help, and his own ingenuity, he auctions it off anonymously as his actions are followed and predicted by Near. The United States of America buys it for a sum that leaves every Japanese citizen under the age of 60 set for life, but the King of Death creates a new rule of the Death Note that thwarts Minoru and the U.S. President’s plans.
‘Death Note’ Season 2 Cast Predictions
There will be no ‘Death Note’ without its cunning original owner, Ryuk. So we are likely to see him again should there be a new season of ‘Death Note.’ The first ‘Death Note’ anime has concluded the story of Light. Hence, he might no longer return. Again, if the second season will adapt the ‘Death Note: Special One Shot,’ then can expect to see Minoru Tanaka take over the leading role. Do you want ‘Death Note’ to return for season 2? Is There A Death Note Prequel?
Nisio Isin has written a prequel novel to ‘Death Note’ in collaboration with manga creator Tsugumi Ohba. The novel is called ‘Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.’ It follows the “potential successor to L, Mello, as he recounts his time working with the famed detective and FBI agent Naomi Misora to stop a serial killer.”
There is a possibility that this may be adapted into an anime, but we have no official confirmation yet.
