Here's everything we know about the renewal status of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners...
The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an animated show that impressed regular viewers and gamers alike... But, I am here to break your heart, as CD Projekt Red has confirmed that there are no plans for a second season. The 10-episode anime series was released on Netflix on September 13 and fans were taken aback by how amazing the show looked. Here is everything we know...
In an interview with Famitsu, which was then translated by Video Games Chronicle, CD Projekt Red community manager Satoru Honma said there were no plans to pick up the story of Edgerunners, "I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback," Honma told Famitsu. "However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.'"
"Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different."
Honma also said that if at some point in the future they decide to create a continuation of the anime then they would go for something completely different and not season 2 for Edgerunners.
"Overseas people say that the anime has given CDPR a second chance. We are grateful to [Studio] Trigger for giving us the chance to enjoy the story of V and Johnny Silverhand after watching the anime," Satoru said.
If you are a fan, it's no big surprise for you that the show ain't returning for a second season. By the end of season 1, almost every member of David's crew died, including David himself. The only exception was Lucy who managed to escape. A second season could have followed her journey from there but Alas, that's not happening. But the good news is, Honma is not shutting the door to this universe forever. The studio will be developing many such productions for us to witness in the near future. But of course, that's no consolation now, is it?
CD Projekt announced earlier this month that the studio is working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, among many other projects. The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is codenamed 'Project Orion' and will be developed by CD Projekt Red North America, a new studio that recently opened in Boston, USA. Work on Orion will begin shortly after the release of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phanton Liberty, coming year.
