N. Richard Nash originally wrote the screenplay titled 'Macho' in the 1970s but 20th Century Fox rejected it twice.
After the rejection, Nash transformed the script into a novel titled, 'Cry Macho' and published it on June 11, 1975. The novel received massive success and high acclaim.
Following the novel's commercial success, Nash went to Fox again with the original screenplay. The company decided to buy the rights to the script this time.
There have been numerous attempts to create the film adaptation for decades now. Several names had been attached to the project, but none of them pushed through.
Finally, in October 2020, Eastwood was announced to produce, direct, and star in the film. Nick Schenk used Nash's original screenplay and gave his own contributions to the script.
