Following the success of the first film, Kevin Kwan's two prequel books have also been confirmed to be adapted into films.
Crazy Rich Asians, the movie came out in 2018. The hit film was based on the 2013 novel of the same title by Kevin Kwan. It was a huge commercial success and went on to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s. The movie was one of the first to feature a majority cast of Chinese descent in a modern setting.
Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeohfollows, the movie follows the story of Rachel, a Chinese-American professor who travels to meet her boyfriend, Nick's family and is surprised to discover he belongs to one of the richest families in Singapore.
Kwan has published two sequels following Crazy Rich Asians — China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. Following the success of the first film, the other two books have also been confirmed to be adapted into films. Here's what you need to know about the sequel:
The plot of the second movie will be based on the book China Rich Girlfriend which was published in 2015. The plot of the book starts on the eve of Rachel's wedding to Nick. The professor is still sad about the fact that her birthfather, a man she never knew, won't be able to walk her down the aisle. But due to a shocking revelation, Rachel ends up in the luxurious world of Shanghai where she meets Carlton, a Ferrari-crashing bad boy, Colette, a celebrity girlfriend chased by paparazzi, and finally the elusive man from Rachel's life, her father. On the other hand, we have Astrid Leong, who is shocked to discover that there is a downside to having a newly minted tech billionaire husband.
New revelations are made and we are taken through Mainland China's most exclusive clubs, auction houses, and estates; taken into the elite circles and offered a glimpse into the life of the crazily rich Chinese.
The film adaptation of the second part was announced soon after the first film was a hit. Since it is a continuation of the previous installment, cast members Wu as Rachel, Golding as Nick, Chan as Astrid Leong-Teo, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin, Lisa Lu as Shang Su Yi, Ken Jeong as Goh Wye Mun, Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Sung-Young, should be returning as the main cast. But nothing has been confirmed yet. No other actor has been roped into the adaptation either. Most of the actors have been engaged in other projects and the project has been unable to pick up yet.
Director Jon Chu was also already committed to shooting the film.
The film is still in the pre-development stage and in a state of semi-hiatus. It is unclear when the project will be taken up again and when it will release.
