What Is The Plot Of 'Colin in Black & White'?

'Colin in Black & White' drama series explores Kaepernick's experiences in high school that guide him to become an activist.

In 2016, Kaepernick made headlines after he knelt during the national anthem at the start of NFL games in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.

His action inspired a wider protest movement, which further escalated in September 2017 following President Donald Trump's statement that NFL owners should "fire" players who protest during the national anthem.

After that season, Kaepernick remained unsigned and people assumed that it was due to political reasons. In 2017, he filed a grievance against the NFL and its owners accusing them of blackballing him as a result of his political stance. Kaepernick withdrew the grievance 2 years after.

The upcoming Netflix series is expected to tackle timely issues such as race, class, and culture.

Duvernay himself has high expectations from the series. In a statement released about the series, Duvernay said that they seek to provide a new perspective to the different realities that Black people face.

“We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high-school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see,” DuVernay added.

“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture, and for him, personally.
