The fifth season of the critically acclaimed 'The Karate Kid' sequel series will have a lot in store.
Cobra Kai is the sequel series of the original The Karate Kid films. This martial arts comedy-drama show has been running since 2018 and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the 1980s films. It follows the "Miyagi-Verse" narrative from Johnny's point of view. He decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, which then rekindles his old rivalry with Daniel.
The show was originally released on YouTube Red and then on Netflix as well. It has received great reviews and currently has four seasons. Here's what you need to know about the future of Cobra Kai:
Ahead of the fourth season on Netflix, which premiered on December 31, 2021, the show was renewed for the fifth season, as reported by Deadline. This was expected of the series which won four Emmy nominations in July, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy, Outstanding Stunt Performance, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy.
In the fourth season, we see Daniel and Johnny's combined dojo, which they made to take on John, is now completely in Terry's control. Terry betrays John to establish a bigger Cobra Kai dojo. Now, Daniel is set to take on Terry to stop him from spreading his less-than-virtuous karate values to the valley. He enlists the help of Chozen Toguchi, his old enemy and new friend, who is currently the sensei of Miyagi-Do karate in Okinawa.
Speaking with TV Line, show co-creator and producer, Jon Hurwitz, stated: "We’re further exploring Robby and his allegiances, and Season 5 is another substantial season for him." Josh Heald added, "We obviously know that Chozen’s coming back into the fold, and Daniel, who we find at the ultimate depth of his loss, is feeling defeated and feeling like he made a deal with the devil." He explained, "Chozen is somebody who ties into the more aggressive past where fighting wasn’t about a contest, it was about life and death. He still feels like he owes Daniel some help, and he wants to make amends even though Daniel has forgiven him. From that alone, I feel like audiences can infer the energy with which Season 5 is going to begin. There is quite a bit of storyline that starts spinning very fast and very aggressively as we enter next season."
We can expect Macchio and Zabka to reprise their roles as Daniel and Johnny respectively. Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen Toguchi, Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz, Peyton List as Tory Nichols, Vanessa Rubio as Carmen Diaz, and Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver will be coming back as well.
As per Screenrant, there is also a possibility of Hilary Swank joining the next season as her character Julie from The Next Karate Kid. But it has not been confirmed officially.
The shoot for the fifth season has already concluded. A major part of the shoot took place in Atlanta with some of it taking place in Puerto Rico. Post-production started in March 2022. As per What's On Netflix, Hurwitz revealed on Twitter that “S5 is fully edited and awesome! Still mixing the second half and working on the score with our composers. Loving some new musical themes!” At this rate, we can expect the fifth season to drop later this year since Cobra Kai follows almost a uniform yearly release.
