'Cinderella': Release Date, Plot, Cast, Trailer and More

Camila Cabello debuts as an actress and stars as Cinderella in this upcoming modern take of the classic fairytale.

The story of Cinderella, the classic fairytale princess who left behind a glass slipper, has been told numerous times. Her story is one of the greatest narratives ever told. So it's not surprising that many modern filmmakers will attempt to produce their rendition of the story over again.

Speaking of which, a new film starring Camila Cabello will attempt to put a modern take on the classic fairytale story. Although the film will be called 'Cinderella,' it will be significantly different from the original fairytale for some reasons.

The film is directed by Kay Cannon, with James Corden, Leo Pearlman, Jonathan Kadin, and Shannon McIntosh as producers.

Here is everything we know about the film, including the release date, plot, cast trailer, and more.

When Will 'Cinderella' Release?

'Cinderella' is coming to Amazon Prime Video on September 3, 2021.

Sony originally intended to release the film in theaters on February 5, 2021. However, this got pushed back to July 16, 2021. In May 2021, Sony announced that they would cancel the film's theatrical release. Amazon Studios bought worldwide rights to the film, except in China.

What Is The Plot Of 'Cinderella'?

Camila Cabello's film debut will put a modern twist to the classic fairytale story. It follows the young Cinderella, described as "an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow." Now, that's a big difference, considering that the original Disney version did not tackle the character's career aspirations. Camila will be performing songs, which will be an integral part of the musical film.

The film will preserve some of the integral structures of the story, including the glass slippers and romantic waltzing. However, there are also some other notable changes. For one, the new movie will feature Cinderella's "not-so-evil stepmother and stepsisters." The film will also go away with the classic, adorable, old fairy godmother. Instead, the character will be portrayed by a vibrant, Black gay guy, Billy Porter.

"It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother—they call it the Fab G,” Porter told CBS. “Magic has no gender.”

Who Is Cast In 'Cinderella'?

Camila Cabello will portray the titular role. Camila is a former member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, formed during the X Factor USA in 2012.

Director Kay Cannon told Entertainment Weekly that Camila will surprise everyone in her acting debut.

"She's going to surprise everyone because nobody's ever seen her act before. She's so fantastic. She's so good, and she's so natural, and just funny and beautiful and really, really talented."

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel will play the role of Evelyn, Cinderella's stepmother. The actress is also a talented singer herself. She sang "Let It Go" in the 2013 Disney animated film, Frozen. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning actress has claimed her Broadway throne in shows like Rent and Wicked.

British actor Nicholas Galitzine will play Prince Robert, while Pierce Brosnan will portray the King, father to the prince.

As mentioned, Billy Porter will portray the fairy godmother. Meanwhile, 'The Late Late Show' host James Corden will play James, a Footman/mouse.
