Children of The Whales gave viewers an unexpected finale, which made them hopeful that the anime series is still going to have season 2.
Children of The Whales is a Japanese anime based on a manga series written and illustrated by Abi Umeda.
It's been more than two years since the anime released. Is season 2 still happening?
Let's find out.
As of this writing, J.C. Staff is yet to announce the renewal for the anime series. This might come as sad news, but fans should find hope in the fact the J.C. Staff has a reputation for renewing worthy anime series.
It's normal for anime series to take a long gap between seasons.
The Japanese animation studio has not announced they're canceling the anime series either, so fans could continue to hope for more.
It's also possible for the show's renewal to be affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, just like most productions in the entertainment industry.
Whatever it is, all the fans could do as of the moment is to remain patient and hopeful.
With the renewal still pending, it's impossible to tell when fans could see the anime series again.
Children of The Whales debuted in Japan in October 2017. It has 12 episodes, which ended in December that year.
J.C. Staff released OVA episodes a while later. In March 2018, Netflix brought the anime series to the global audience.
With Netflix now entering the scene, there's more hope for the future of the series. In 2017, Dan Rayburn, a market research analyst from Frost & Sullivan, spoke to Wired and revealed why producing anime series could be the future for streaming platforms like Netflix.
According to Rayburn, producing anime series is much cheaper than producing live-action films.
"You're not paying all that cost that goes into sets and stars and all that. You're paying for all the people who have to produce it, but it's at a much, much lower cost." Rayburn said.
Children Of The Whales is set in a world covered with sand. In that desolate world lives 513 people aboard a ship called the "Mud-Whale." One day, the Mud-Whale comes upon another ship.
The super-powered archivist, Chakuro, together with a mysterious girl Rikosu decided to go on an adventure to discover what's beyond their limited world.
Season one had an open ending with the Mud-Whale escaping its prison in the sea of sands. The next installment may only cover the remaining three to four volumes of the manga series.
The first season was criticized for its fast pacing, so perhaps, four volumes are enough source material for season 2 already. If the animation studio thinks otherwise, they can always opt for a different spin should they decide to come up with a follow-up season soon.
While there is hope for a follow-up season, Children of The Whales season 2 status remains floating.
