Charlize Theron's The Old Guard Breaks Netflix Records

Charlize Theron's The Old Guard Breaks Netflix Records

Theron's action thriller film smashes Netflix records on its first week.

Charlize Theron's The Old Guard officially enters Netflix's Top 10 most popular movies.

Also breaking records is the film's director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, who becomes the first Black female director on the list.

The action thriller film has just launched this month and is already making waves on the streaming platform.

The Old Guard

The Old Guard follows Theron as a century-old warrior Andromache of Scythia, also known as Andy.

She leads a group of immortal mercenaries, and together, they've decided to devote their eternal lives by doing what they think is best for humanity.

The group was caught in another dangerous battle after powerful people learned about their immortality and became determined to capture and study them at all costs.

The show instantly broke Netflix records just a week since its release on July 10.

Last Friday night (July 17), Netflix released the great news via tweet: "The Old Guard is breaking records! The Charlize Theron blockbuster is already among the top 10 most popular Netflix films ever – and Gina Prince-Bythewood is the first Black female director on the list.

Netflix further revealed that the film is currently on track to reach 72M households in its first four weeks!

If the forecast is right, that means Old guard could soon replace Robert De Niro' The Irishman in the sixth spot of Netflix's most popular films of all time, with only 69 million views recorded as of the moment.

That is, of course, considering some other factors would remain constant.

Theron has already shared the fantastic news on her twitter account and later posted a meme of herself drinking booze straight out of the bottle then lying face down on the floor.

The actress simply captioned the post: "I feel this."

The film received an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and continues to create a buzz on different social media accounts.

The Old Guard is based on Greg Rucka's comic book of the same name. It has been praised for its excellent work on effectively putting LGBTQ+ casts at the center of the story.

Nile and Andi Mix it Up.

Starring alongside Theron in the flick is Kiandra "KiKi" Layne as Nile Freeman, a former US Marine and the newly awakened immortal.

Marwan Kenzari stars as Joe, a Muslim warrior who fell in love with a former crusader Nicky / Niccolò di Genova (played by Luca Marinelli) during the crusades.

Matthias Schoenaerts stars as Booker, a former French soldier who fought under Napoleon.

For those who haven't seen the film yet, The Old Guard is still available for streaming on Netflix.
