A new actor has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

The MCU welcomed Doctor Clea Strange played by Charlize Theron during the mid-credit scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Word of her casting has finally gotten out confirming the rumors that have been going around for a while now leading up to the release of the film. The Aeonflux actress took to Instagram to introduce her character to the fans. She shared a picture of herself with her bright purple eye makeup in the first picture and also shared a still from the film, captioning it, "Meet Clea."

Doctor Clea Strange in the comics is a sorceress as well who is the disciple of Doctor Stephen Strange. She becomes his lover. eventually his wife, and then his ultimate successor as Sorcerer Supreme. Her character first came up in Strange Tales #126, 1964. As the Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension, possessing vast powers involving the manipulation of the forces of magic for a variety of effects. Clea was earlier portrayed by Anne-Marie Martin in the 1978 television film Dr. Strange. Theron is now carrying the legacy of the character forward into the MCU.

The future of her character and how it will play into the MCU is still unclear. With the multiverse opened up, there is a lot of potential for Clea to be a part of the MCU films in the near future. Clea has been associated in the comics with Loki. Later this year, Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release on July 8, 2022. The film is set following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). So far we know that the story will follow Thor's attempts to find inner peace but is forced to return to action and recruit Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster—who has become the Mighty Thor—to stop Gorr the God Butcher from eliminating all the gods. The film is directed by Taika Waititi.

Previously, Clea had made a background cameo in the X-Men animated series episode "Nightcrawler." Going by this, and how the next phase of the MCU will have an X-Men movie, she could be a part of that as well. But this is only in Phase Five of the MCU which starts after 2023.

Theron is one of the biggest names Marvel has been able to secure for its franchise. Last year, Harry Styles joined the franchise as Eros, the brother of Thanos, during the mid-credit scene of Eternals. As of now, Theron will next appear in the Netflix film The School for Good and Evil directed by Paul Feig and co-starring Kerry Washington, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, Rachel Bloom, and Laurence Fishburne.
