'Castlevania' Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

'Castlevania' Season 4 ended definitively, but there is still plenty to expect from the Castlevania universe.

'Castlevania' Season 5

'Castlevania' holds an integral part in revolutionizing Netflix programming. The anime series was released in July 2017, and it is the streamer’s first original anime series. It quickly gained a lot of fans and was well-received by critics. Its second season scored a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and bagged an IGN Award for Best Animated TV Series in 2018. With such positive reception and success, fans got confused when Netflix announced that the anime would end on season 4. However, fans should not worry because we will eventually return to the 'Castlevania' universe soon. Let us dive deep.

'Castlevania' Season 5

Will There Be 'Castlevania' season 5?

Sadly, 'Castlevania' season 5 is not happening. The anime was renewed for a fourth season in March 2020, a few weeks after the third season got released on Netflix. A month after the renewal, it was reported that the fourth season would also be the final run for the anime. The last season was released in May 2021 and wrapped the plot pretty nicely. As usual, Netflix did not give us a reason for the cancelation. The streamer also often keeps its viewing figures secret (except for a few well-performing shows). Hence, we might never know the actual reason behind the cancelation. We can only speculate that the anime came to its natural conclusion and be grateful that it managed to tie its loose endings properly. The fourth and final season of 'Castlevania' ends with one last bloody battle at Castle Dracula. We found out that Malcolm McDowell’s Varney is The Grim Reaper, who wants to bring back Dracula and drive him to go on a killing spree so they can get endless food sources. Thanks to Trevor, the sinister plan got stopped. Everything went well in the end. Trevor, Sypha, Alucard, and Greta all had their happy endings, as well as Dracula and Lisa too. Dracula and Lisa got resurrected in their bodies, and they chose to explore the world together instead of pursuing vengeance.

Is There A 'Castlevania' Spinoff?

Kinda. In April 2021, Deadline reported that there would be a “new series set in the same Castlevania universe with an entirely new cast of characters.” According to Netflix, the all-new series will star Richter Belmont (the son of Sypha and Trevor) and Maria Renard and is set in France during the French Revolution.

It was later confirmed that the Castlevania spin-off will be called Castlevania: Nocturne and will be released on Netflix on September 28, 2023. This new series will feature a new list of characters  You can check out the official teaser trailer below.

Will There Be More 'Castlevania' Content In The Future?

Although the anime already concluded and wrapped up Trevor Belmont’s story definitively, there are still plenty of options for the 'Castlevania' universe to return to Netflix in the future. There are decades worth of material that can get adapted into spinoffs. But aside from spinoffs, there are other ways to explore the 'Castlevania' universe, such as a multiverse cross-over. In 2018, Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar acquired the rights to the Japanese videogame series 'Devil May Cry.' He will produce an animated series based on the game and tell IGN that it “will join Castlevania in what we’re now calling the bootleg multiverse.” However, we do not know yet how Castlevania will fit into the crossover project, although we might find out soon enough. In October 2021, Producer Adi Shankar gave us a much-awaited update on 'Devil May Cry.' The script for the first season is already complete.

"All the season one scripts are done," Shankar told ComicBook.

"I collaborated with a very talented writer named Alex Larson on the scripts. The scripts are rad and I wanted to execute them in a manner that would make my fellow DMC fans proud. Again, this was developed by a DMC fan for DMC fans, that was the ethos of this project. Production should start at the beginning of next year."
