Captain Fall Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

If you’re a fan of animated series and love thrilling adventures, you’ve probably come across “Captain Fall” on Netflix. This action-packed show follows the journey of hopeful-yet-naïve Captain Jonathan Fall as he faces unexpected challenges in his quest to become a naval captain. But what’s in store for our protagonist? Will there be a second season to continue the captivating story? Let’s dive in and explore the potential future of “Captain Fall.”

Will There Be “Captain Fall” Season 2?

In July 2020, when the show was announced, Variety noted that it received an upfront order, a common practice in animation where multiple episodes are commissioned at the outset due to the unique production process of animated content compared to live-action.

According to the Variety article, Netflix ordered a total of 20 episodes for the show, to be released in two parts. Now, you might think this guarantees a second season with 10 more episodes, but it’s not as straightforward as it seems.

Joel Trussell, the executive producer and showrunner, took to LinkedIn after the initial release of the first ten episodes. He hinted that the fate of additional episodes might hinge on the viewership numbers. In a post, Trussell shared an article from BolaVIP highlighting the early success of the show (though without specific sources). He indicated that the next ten episodes are or have been in development but might not see the light of day unless the viewership reaches a significant level.

Trussell explicitly mentioned on LinkedIn, “We have 10 more episodes fully written, recorded, and storyboarded that will complete the season if we get enough viewership.” To emphasize the importance of audience engagement, he conducted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit. In one of his responses, he expressed gratitude for any form of viewer interaction, stating, “Any type of watch, share, rating, comment, click, clack, or otherwise is so helpful as we try to game the algorithm. We already have another 10 episodes written, recorded, and storyboarded and ready to animate, but they will only be produced if these first 10 get a robust reception, so I really appreciate the support!”
Responding to a question about whether the next ten episodes would be part 2 of season 1 or constitute a new season, Trussell clarified in another Reddit reply, “Technically this is just the first block of season 1. That’s why the first 10 ends with a cliffhanger because we made it to have a complete arch over 20 eps. We’d love to share the whole thing with the world but need help from people like yourself spreading the word! Thanks for asking!”

In mid-November 2023, after Hollywood started recovering from two strikes, Netflix announced the cancellation of several shows, including Captain Fall. The show was already facing challenges, and according to Deadline:

“Captain Fall’s cancellation comes in the midst of Season 1. The animated series had been picked up for a 20-episode first season to air in two parts. The decision not to proceed comes after Part 1, released in July, failed to draw a large audience.”

The Premise of Captain Fall

“Captain Fall” kicks off on Netflix with the premiere on July 28, 2023, where we meet the determined Jonathan Fall who fails in his mission to become a naval captain. This setback complicates his job hunt, leading to an unexpected offer from a sinister organization involved in smuggling and human trafficking. These masterminds decide to appoint him as the captain of their corrupt holiday cruise, aiming to exploit his incompetence after the previous captain’s arrest.

A Closer Look at the Show’s Origins

The brilliant minds behind “Captain Fall” are Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, creators of the Norwegian comedy series “Norsemen.” Initially pitched as a live-action series, Netflix presented a unique proposal to transform it into an animated show. While it took some getting used to, Helgaker and Torgersen embraced the animated format, as it opened up limitless possibilities for their storytelling.

The Cliffhanger Ending Of “Captain Fall” Season 1

All ten episodes of “Captain Fall” are now available to stream on Netflix, and the show concludes with a suspenseful cliffhanger. Fans are left wondering about the fate of our protagonist and whether the tangled web of crime and deception surrounding him will ever unravel.

The Audience Response For “Captain Fall”

Despite being a relatively new show, “Captain Fall” has received mostly positive feedback from viewers. With its quirkiness and captivating plot, many have been enticed to binge-watch the animated series. Currently, it holds a 69% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a user score of 6.6/10 on IMDb based on 130 reviews. Comparable to other popular Netflix series like “Big Mouth” and “Inside Job,” “Captain Fall” has the potential to gather a larger fanbase as word-of-mouth spreads.
