'Captain America 4' is officially taking flight with Anthony Mackie in the lead.
'Captain America 4' is officially happening, and Marvel finally signed up the new superhero lead for the upcoming installment.
Chris Evans played the title character in the first three installments of the film series (Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War). In 2019, 'Avengers: Endgame' saw Anthony Mackie take over the shield.
The first season of 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' concluded with Mackie's character, Sam Wilson, taking over the mantle of Captain America.
The ending fired rumors that there will be a fourth 'Captain America' film with Mackie starring in the lead role. Now, the rumors are finally confirmed.
Here are all the latest updates about 'Captain America 4' so far.
As of this writing, Marvel is yet to announce a release date for 'Captain America 4'. It is unclear yet if the new 'Captain America' film will be part of Phase 4 or Phase 5. 'Captain America 4' is still in the early stages of development, and we expect plenty of updates as the film heads to production. The current production plan is to begin preparation in May 2022 and start filming in June 2022 in Georgia.
Most of the exact plot details about the new film remain unknown. All we know for now is that it will feature Mackie in the lead role.
'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' head writer and creator Malcolm Spellman is on board to write the script for 'Captain America 4', along with series staff writer Dalan Musson. That suggests the big screen installment will, indeed, act as a sequel of sorts to the TV series, carrying on the same story and bringing back some of the relevant characters.
Just like the film's plot, most of the remaining character details are kept under wraps.
So far, Anthony Mackie is the only confirmed casting for 'Captain America 4'. He will portray Sam Wilson, the first Black Captain America to appear on the big screen. His casting is a historic milestone for the company.
In a funny behind the scene story, Mackie wasn't even aware that the film was being made. He found out while he was at the local mega-mart grocers when an employee congratulated him back in May.
"I didn't get a call or email, nothing," Mackie revealed to Variety.
"A fan knew the whole breakdown of everything before I did, I hadn't heard anything. I'm like, dude, you got breaking news in the grocery store!"
On August 18, 2021, Deadline reported that Anthony Mackie officially closed a deal to star in 'Captain America 4.'
We are still waiting for confirmation if the movie will involve Sebastian Stan and Emily VanCamp. Stan and Mackie starred together in the highly-acclaimed 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.'
Meanwhile, VanCamp has played Sharon Carter. Carter is the niece of S.H.I.E.L.D. founder and Steve Rogers’ true love, Peggy, since 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier.' It was the same film where Mackie first appeared.
We assume that we will see other Marvel familiar faces like Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, Seinfeld) as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and also Wyatt Russell as the maybe-a-villain-maybe-an-antihero US Agent.
There is no official trailer yet. However, you can rewatch the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and, of course, 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' on Disney Plus for your superhero fix in the meantime. Make sure to follow us for the latest updates on your favorite TV shows and films!
