Canine Intervention is a Netflix reality TV show that follows Jas Leverette, a dog trainer, who works with a variety of dogs and their owners to fix obedience and behavioral issues. The show premiered on February 24, 2021, and each episode that spans about half an hour shows Leverette dealing with a specific problem at his training facility, Cali K9 in San Jose. The first season has only six episodes and features six dogs and their humans: one person recovering from the psychological effects of prison incarceration, two military brothers, a young boy who gets an emotional support dog.
The show received a lot of backlash for the training methods Leverette used as some people thought it was borderline animal abuse. On the other hand, there were those who believed that there was nothing abusive about his methods. Here’s what you need to know about the future of the docuseries.
Will There Be Season 2 Of Canine Intervention?
It has been four years since the first season premiered on Netflix. The show was met with a lot of resistance from dog lovers who claimed Netflix was giving a platform to animal abuse. “We don’t need another Cesar,” Saro Boghozian, a certified dog trainer and author of A Dog’s Five Essential Needs, stated. He was referencing Cesar Millan aka the Dog Whisperer who was criticized for using inhuman methods to rehabilitate dogs citing the image on the Change.org petition page. Boghozian went on to state that we don’t need “another aversive method of dog training popularized on TV shows in the form of entertainment that does more harm than good.” He also opined that Canine Intervention was so alarming.
Considering all the negative press the show got during its first run, chances are, Netflix may not risk renewing it for another season.
As per Leverette’s website, he uses the “5-pillar dog training method is a proprietary system of reward-based, balanced, competition-level dog training techniques and tools to make you and your dog successful in any situation.” The dog trainer’s customers include big names like Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry, Jonathan Kuminga, singer Jason Derulo, boxer Andre Berto, comedian Kevin Hart, among others. If other high-profile dog owners approach Leverette for assistance, there may be a possibility of another season.
Speaking to LA Times, Leverette stated: “I believe there are no bad dogs, just uninformed owners. So this show isn’t just about entertainment. This is a way to empower and educate the average person — especially those who can’t afford to go to dog training classes — with systems of how to get a dog into that confident, dopamine state and just be the best they can be.” In the show, he handles each case with gentleness using positive reinforcement methods.
When Will Season 2 Of Canine Intervention Be Released?
At the moment, it does not look like the show will be returning. But if it is renewed, then chances are we can expect it to be released in 2025.
