The show is deviating from the order of the novels written by Julia Quinn, on which the previous two seasons have based the story on, with a ton of creative freedom. As per the book series, the third book is An Offer From a Gentleman which is based on the Bridgerton brother Benedict as the protagonist. But they have skipped ahead to the third Bridgerton brother, Colin. This is nothing but good news for all the ardent "Polin" shippers who finally get to see their friendship flourish to something more.

In a social media post in the form of a newsletter from Lady Whistedown, the announcement of the third season was made. "It is only fair that in this author's third year chronicling the marriage mart, Mayfair's social season should find its focus on a third son... as well as a third daughter," the announcement read. Confirming that their budding relationship will be at the center of the story, the post added, “With Penelope’s days as a wallflower wearing thin, will she finally take bloom? Time will tell, and as always, so will this author.” The third season will ensure that "Miss Penelope Featherington cannot remain a wallflower forever, as all plants thrive best in the sunlight."

Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope noted this change in the order and said, "I feel like if you see Penelope fawning over this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together! Come on, move on and get over it.’ She added, “Jess [Brownell] has talked to Luke and me through the season, and I think people are going to be really obsessed. I think book fans are going to be happy.” She also acknowledged how fans liked the racy parts of the show and while she can't confirm which parts will make it to the screen, she assured, “From what I have heard, I think people are going to be extremely pleased.”

Luke Newton, who plays Colin, is just as excited about the next season. "I love Polin," he said, admitting that he routinely goes through the "Polin" ship hashtag online. “There’s so much love for that relationship, which brings its pressures because there are people that are really excited about this story to come to the forefront,” he said. “But also it really warms me.” So far, we have seen the unrequited love from Penelope and in the second season, Colin even says he would "never dream of courting" Penelope that she overhears. We will have to wait and see how his views about Penelope will change.

Showrunner Chris Van Dusen told Variety: “I really feel like it’s Colin and Penelope’s time. Because we’ve been watching both of these actors on our screens since Season 1, we’ve already invested in them a little bit. We know who they are as people. I feel like, especially in the last season, there are these moments of tension between them where it’s like, Colin walks up to the line of almost realizing that Penelope has feelings for him but doesn’t quite get there. Instead of treading water on that dynamic, we wanted to push it into their season. It really felt like the perfect moment to tee it up.”

A release date has not been announced yet for the third season.
