‘Black Summer’ season 2 gave the summer of 2021 a deadly and heart-pounding twist. The second season dropped eight new episodes on Netflix in June and sees the survivors continue to fight for their lives amidst a deadly zombie apocalypse. ‘Black Summer’ season 2 left plenty of cliffhangers, and as expected, fans are already asking for more. Let’s find out what the future holds for Karl Schaefer and John Hyams’ zombie apocalypse series.
Will There Be ‘Black Summer’ Season 3?
Season 2 of Black Summer premiered on Netflix in June 2021. However, after its release, there was no update on the show’s fate for an extended period of time. Based on previous patterns observed with Netflix Original releases, many assumed that the show had been quietly canceled. It wasn’t until April 2023 that John Hyams, co-creator of Black Summer alongside Karl Schaefer, confirmed on his Twitter account that the series would not be returning for a third season.
In response to an inquiry on April 14th, 2023, regarding the potential for a third season, Hyams stated, “Sadly, nah.” This announcement ended any lingering hopes of a continuation.
Later that year, a new Instagram account hinted at the possibility of a new season in 2024, bringing a glimmer of optimism. However, when approached, John Hyams expressed unawareness of any such plans, indicating that the account was a fabrication with no basis in reality.
Initially, “Black Summer” Season 2 had some success, entering the top ten shows on Netflix in the United States between June 17th, 2021 and July 2nd, 2021. However, changes in how Netflix calculates and displays its top tens have affected the series’ ranking. It has since been overtaken by other titles such as “CoComelon,” “Sweet Tooth,” and “Newly Rich, Newly Poor.” Globally, “Black Summer” Season 2 struggled to break into the TV top ten, failing to outperform other series like “Lucifer” Season 3, which received significantly more viewing hours. According to data from FlixPatrol, the show quickly dropped out of the top ten charts worldwide. This is noteworthy because many shows that were canceled in 2021 struggled to maintain a top-ten ranking for 30 days.
In the United States, “Black Summer” Season 2 held a top-ten position for 12 days, while in the UK, it only managed to stay in the top ten for 14 days. This data suggests that the show may not have sustained the level of viewership that would typically warrant a renewal for another season. However, it’s crucial to remember that viewership metrics are just one factor that networks and streaming platforms consider when deciding the fate of a series. Other factors, like production costs, critical acclaim, and the availability of key cast and crew, can also influence these decisions.
Jamie King, one of the show’s main stars, expressed optimism about a potential third season around the time of Season 2’s release. She discussed her ideas for the next season and her eagerness to work with the writers. However, she also suggested that a third season might be the show’s last. Her comments indicate that the future of “Black Summer” is uncertain, with no concrete plans in place.
Netflix’s decision to decline comment on the show’s renewal status adds to the intrigue surrounding its future.
When Will ‘Black Summer’ Season 3 Possibly Release?
The first season of ‘Black Summer’ premiered on Netflix on April 11, 2019. Netflix has remained quiet regarding the show’s future for several months, despite the positive audience reception when it arrived on the platform. Some people speculated that the series will no longer return since the last episode has pretty much wrapped up the story, but they were wrong. In November 2019, Netflix officially announced that season 2 is happening. Unfortunately, we had to wait for two years before getting a follow-up season. The production had also suffered setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, in June 2021, ‘Black Summer’ season 2 arrived.
But since Black Summer is canceled we have no potential release for a third season in the cards. But we’ll keep an eye open for any updates.
What Could Have Been The Plot Of ‘Black Summer’ Season 3?
Warning: Season 2 spoilers below.
Unlike the first season which had a seemingly definitive ending, the second season left a lot of loose threads. These cliffhangers can be a great jump-off point for ‘Black Summer’ season 3.
The second season focused on the survivors trying to get to the airstrip. They want to board the mysterious plane that drops supplies around the area, and hopefully, go somewhere safe. Only Sun managed to get into the plane among all the survivors that reached the airstrip. Where is the plane headed? Will Sun finally get to a place that isn’t infected? We will have to wait for another season to find out. Unfortunately, the plane is just a temporary solution to the undead plague. We heard that the pilot has to stop to refuel, and who knows what challenges await them when they land?
Another question that has to be answered is Rose’s fate. She was unable to board the plane after she injured her leg. Her daughter Anna chose to run back to her instead of boarding the plane and leaving her behind. Anna might be determined to do anything to survive, but Rose is losing some motivation. However, Rose’s concerns are legit. Where will they go now that the plane is no longer an option? It seems like the Ski-Lodge is the best choice they have left. It isn’t clear if Anna chose to leave her demotivated mother behind as she gets into a car.
The quest for survival shall continue.
Who Could Have Beeen Cast In ‘Black Summer’ Season 3?
If Season 3 happens to get miraculously renewed it is highly likely that Jaime King will return as Rose, alongside Zoe Marlett as her daughter, Anna. Jesse Lipscombe played a significant role in season 2 as Mance, and his character survived until the end of the second season. Therefore, he is also expected to return.
Christine Lee is also likely to reprise her role as Ooh “Sun” Kyungsun, as her character safely boarded the plane in season 2.
Ray, portrayed by Bobby Naderi, was severely injured in season 2 when Rose used the flare guns to shoot the fuel barrels behind him. His character’s survival in season 3 is uncertain due to his critical condition.
