'Big Little Lies' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Will we see the Monterey Five again?

Big Little Lies Season 3

It's been more than three years since we last saw the Monterey Five in the season 2 finale of 'Big Little Lies.' The HBO drama series follows five women in Monterey, California, who got entangled in a murder investigation. The show has enjoyed great reception, with 1.98 million viewers during its initial airing, rising to 3.1 million viewers across HBO's other platforms. The next question is, will the series return for more? Here's what we know.

Is 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Happening?

Unfortunately, season 3 of Big Little Lies is not on the cards. In November 2022, Zoe Kravitz, who stars as Bonnie in the series, said: "I don’t think it is [happening]. We talked about doing a season three a lot, and, unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year, which is heartbreaking, and I just can't imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. So, unfortunately, it's done.”

Creator and executive producer David E Kelley appeared on TV Line in October and revealed that a season 3 might not be possible yet, noting everyone's busy schedule.

"I'm not sure logistically how it could be done because everyone is so busy...It (certainly) couldn't be done right away. Down the road? Maybe" Kelley told TVLine.

But fans shouldn't lose hope yet, as Kelley added: "But we so love the show and the characters, so none of us have given up on the idea of bringing the band back together."

When Will 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Release?

A third season is not yet confirmed as of this writing, and it is likely to take a while before everybody gets some free time to work on the project. Hence, there is no way to confirm the release of season 3.

'Big Little Lies' premiered in February 2017, and we had to wait until June 2019 to get season 2. Though season 3 is not happening (as of now), the cast and the crew have already expressed their interest in returning for another season. However, the tight schedule is making it more challenging for them to gather and film the next season.

"I love this group of people – I would do anything with them. But the reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood," HBO's president of programming Casey Bloys told TVLine.

"We have deals with some of them — Nicole is doing her next show [The Undoing] with us. I just think it's not realistic."

Bloys also spoke to Entertainment Weekly about a potential season 3 and it wasn't a very promising update. He said: "To me, there's no obvious place to go, or no obvious story. That said, this group is extraordinary ... so if they all came to me and said, 'We have the greatest take,' ... I would certainly be open to it because I love working with all of them."

In 2020, ET Online reported on an Instagram Live conversation between In 2020, Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern had a conversation on Instagram Live in which they spoke about a potential Season 3. Witherspoon said, "We want to do it, we're just kind of waiting — we talked to Nicole, didn't we? We Facetimed Nicole the other day."

Then, in December 2021, Kidman appeared on SiriusXM's "Radio Andy". When asked by host Andy Cohen about roles from her career she would like to revisit, she responded, "I think we'd all love to do a 'Big Little Lies' season three, you know?" However, as for whether or not that was actually going to happen, Kidman said, "I don't know."

'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Cast: Who Could Return?

The following characters are likely to come back should the show get renewed for season 3.

They are Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), Ed (Adam Scott), Nathan (James Tupper), Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling), Abigail (Kathryn Newton), Ziggy (Iain Armitage), Chloe (Darby Camp), Josh (Cameron Crovetti), Max (Nicholas Crovetti), Skye (Chloe Coleman) and Amabella (Ivy George) among others.

There's also a chance for us to see Robin Weigert as therapist, Dr. Amanda Reisman, and Douglas Smith could come back as Corey, Jane's love interest and colleague. We aren't sure if there will be a place for Meryl Streep's Mary Louise in season 3 after she fought in court to have Celeste's children taken away from her.

'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Plot: What Is It All About?

The source material for the series has long been exhausted, so the team is likely to draft an entirely new script if they return for season 3. Sadly, that means it would give us a hard time guessing what could happen in the next season. Towards the end of season 2, the Monterey Five all went to the local police station, where we assume Bonnie will confess to deliberately pushing Perry down the stairs after watching him attack Celeste. If season 3 happens, it will likely follow Bonnie as she faces the consequences of what she's done and how her friends will try to help her.

During Vanity Fair's Little Gold Men podcast, Kravitz said about the ending:

"I think the way we ended the season was obviously really intriguing, but also everyone got to come together…I think that felt important to everybody because I think that was one of the most powerful things about the end of season one, is these women and our stories are all quite separate, but kind of finally coming together at the end.

"So I think that was the reason we went in the direction we did. But I would love to do another season."
