The story follows the story of an aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon, Evelyn Hugo, who is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But she chooses an obscure reporter, Monique Grant, from an unknown publication to do this surprising the journalist community. Monique decides to make the best of the opportunity during a rough patch in life when her career has hit a wall and her husband has just left her.
Monique meets Evelyn at her Upper East Side apartment and through the interview we see the old star's glamour life unfurl. The story then leads to the present as it crosses Monique's own life in a tragic manner.
So far, there has been no mention of who will be playing the two lead roles. However, it has been confirmed that Liz Tigelaar, creator and showrunner of the hit Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere will be adapting the book into the film. Liza Chasin for 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn for Circle of Confusion will be producing the film, as reported by Deadline.
Tigelaar is currently also adapting another of Reid's books. New York Times bestseller, Malibu Rising, is also being adapted for Hulu and 20th Century Television. Author Reid is on a role as her book Daisy Jones & the Six is another work that is being adapted into a series for Amazon.
The book was previously supposed to be adapted into a television series. Freeform and Fox 21 Television Studios had even bought the rights. Reid was set to work as the screenwriter. But last year, she confirmed that the rights were transferred to someone else but expressed enthusiasm for the direction the project was headed in.
The announcement for the movie adaptation was just announced. A release date has not been mentioned yet.
