We almost got a scene in Avengers: Endgame that featured Thor fighting Thor in Asgard. It was also revealed that a scene where Thor and Valkyrie almost kissed was cut too.
The Avengers: Endgame is truly a marvel (no pun intended) to behold because of how it culminated over 11 years of fantastic storytelling. That’s a total of 21 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be exact. But it was clear as day that the directors and the writers couldn’t possibly tie up every loose end from those movies in this three-hour box-office, blockbuster classic. Although it’s a common practice to edit or get rid of certain parts that were intended for the movie in its early draft, then cut out from the final product, one of them surprised us to no end.
Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo during their interview with Happy Sad Confused had originally planned to include a fight scene between chunky Thor against a young buff Thor. When host Josh Horowitz asked about this scene since we did see Captain America and Nebula facing off against their past selves, Joe responded:
“We did have a sequence where they finally confront each other in Asgard,"
Anthony Russo further added by saying, "I can't remember exactly why we moved off it. I think it got overly complicated and we liked Cap vs Cap better."
In the end, it all came down to how chockfull of content the movie had, which the brother directing duo wanted to ensure had enough time to engage their audience. Joe Russo says, “Once you start developing it, you can see how crowded it gets. We wanted to make sure we had story space to create real conflict for the Avengers that were going back [in time].”
The Russo Brothers wanted to focus on the main cast for Endgame since that is what the first movie, Infinity War did. But they also wanted to include other characters in the mix, such as Ant-Man because of how crucial they were to the plot.
Still, that’s not to say that a Thor vs. Thor fight couldn’t have been amazing given how much the character has grown over the last decade. But we have to admit that what the final product gave us was a lot better. Anthony Russo said:
“I think there we also deferred to the storyline of Thor and his mother, which was more resonate. That was more part of Thor's journey and repair than confronting his former self."
And then there was a second deleted scene planned in the film’s original draft where Thor nearly kissed Valkyrie. Yup, that is not an exaggeration in the least as Anthony Russo explained in his interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“He had this beat with Valkyrie where she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. She goes, ‘What are you doing?’ Thor is confused. “‘Oh, I thought that touch…’ and she was like, ‘No, that was, like, a goodbye tap I was giving you."
Boy! Talk about an awkward yet somewhat of a missed opportunity, huh? But who knows? Maybe that moment is yet to come.
