Avengers: Doomsday – Everything We Know So Far

Avengers: Doomsday might be filming right now. Filming for the movie began in late April after the cast announcement. This announcement included many actors, with some exciting additions from X-Men and some notable absences.

At Marvel’s Comic-Con panel in July 2024, it was announced that Joe and Anthony Russo will return to direct Avengers. Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. What’s more, Robert Downey Jr is back, but not as Iron Man… as Doctor Doom.

The Russos are replacing the original director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who left the film in November 2023.

In February 2024, it was announced that Marvel is changing Avengers 5, and it will have a new title instead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Jonathan Majors was let go by Marvel on December 18, 2023, after being found guilty of assault and harassment.

The next Avengers movie is the first part of a two-part series that will end The Multiverse Saga. However, before we can think about Secret Wars, there’s still a lot to do with Avengers: Doomsday.

Here’s all you need to know about the Avengers: Doomsday.

When Will Avengers: Doomsday Be Released?

Avengers: Doomsday has been delayed again and will now be released in theaters on 18 December 2026.

That is a seven-month delay from the earlier release date of May 1, 2026, which was already a year later than the original release date of May 2, 2025.

The delay has also affected Avengers: Secret Wars and will now be released in theaters on December 17, 2027, instead of May 7, 2027.

Filming has now begun on Avengers: Doomsday. Secret Wars will start shortly after Doomsday ends.

“We’re shooting them fairly back-to-back, it’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see,” Joe Russo confirmed in March 2025.

Who Is In The Cast Of Avengers: Doomsday?

Let’s begin with the big news. Robert Downey Jr has been confirmed to play the famous Marvel villain Doctor Doom in Avengers. Doomsday.

We’re not sure how it will work yet, but it wouldn’t be surprising if this Doctor Doom comes from the world in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.

We still don’t know if Victor Von Doom is a version of Tony Stark.

We had to wait until March 2025 for more official cast announcements, but we now know that these MCU stars are returning for Avengers, thanks to a lot of chairs: Doomsday:

  • Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
  • Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman)
  • Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America)
  • Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes)
  • Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther)
  • Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man)
  • Wyatt Russell (John Walker/US Agent)
  • Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor)
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing)
  • Simu Liu (Shang-Chi)
  • Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova)
  • Kelsey Grammer (Hank McCoy/Beast)
  • Lewis Pullman (Robert ‘Bob’ Reynolds/Sentry)
  • Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres/Falcon)
  • Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch)
  • David Harbour (Red Guardian)
  • Winston Duke (M’Baku)
  • Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost)
  • Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
  • Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X)
  • Ian McKellen (Erik Magnus Lehnsherr/Magneto)
  • Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler)
  • Rebecca Romijn (Raven Darkhölme/Mystique)
  • James Marden (Scott Summers/Cyclops)
  • Channing Tatum (Remy LeBeau/Gambit)
  • Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic)

We are still lacking some important names that many thought would be in Avengers: Doomsday, like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

However, Downey Jr has been hinting at future cast announcements that are yet to be revealed.

Who might those extra stars be? It’s not clear right now, but many MCU stars have been sharing their thoughts on possible returns.

Reports say that Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers in the new movie, but he has denied it. Hayley Atwell has also been rumoured to return as Peggy Carter, but hasn’t commented yet.

Benedict Cumberbatch is likely confusing everyone on purpose by stating that Doctor Strange will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, although will be in “a lot” of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Cumberbatch has since mentioned that he is in Avengers: Doomsday, just a few days after what he said before, so it’s uncertain.

Brie Larson hinted to fans in August 2024 that she knows “things” about her return to the MCU but didn’t actually confirm it. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is unsure if he will return as Deadpool.

Scarlett Johansson has totally said she won’t come back, if you trust what she says.

What Is The Plot Of Avengers: Doomsday?

At first, it seemed like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania showed why Kang would be a threatening villain in the future.

The Kang we saw in the Quantum Realm, trying to return to normal reality, seemed to have been crushed to death.

However, the mid-credit scene of the film showed a whole council of Kangs, featuring the main villain, Immortus. He gathers all the Kangs and motivates them by saying: “They will take everything we built, so let’s stop wasting time.”

We expected the new movie to be based on this, but now that Majors has left and Doctor Doom has been announced, it looks like Avengers: Doomsday will be a total change from what was planned.

It’s also possible that Marvel has simply replaced Doctor Doom with Kang, and the story stays the same.

Even with the cast announcement, we still don’t know much about what Doomsday will be about. However, Joe Russo has hinted that they discovered a “very radical” approach to the story that will “challenge audiences.”

All we really know is that it’ll set up Secret Wars, and Captain America: Brave New World’s credit scene definitely refers to the comic storyline where different versions of Earth are in competition with each other.

In the post-credit scene of Thunderbolts*, a spaceship from The Fantastic Four arrives in the orbit of the ‘main’ MCU universe. We’ll learn more about this in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
