The Avatar sequel has been a much-anticipated release since the first film came out more than a decade ago. It has been in the works since 2010 and we will finally be able to see it come to life at the end of the year.

The sequel film now officially has a name that was revealed at CinemaCon 2022. It will be called Avatar: The Way of Water. The first 3D footage was also revealed by producer Jon Landau. A more detailed picture of the film's plot was also shared at the event.

The official synopsis reads: "Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure." A familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started and Jake must work with Neytiri and the Na’vi army to protect their planet. We will see Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington reprising their roles along with Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald.

Cameron returned to his role as director and producer along with Landau. “The journey across all four movies will create a connected saga,” Landau stated. “To achieve our goals, we need a strong partnership with you and the studio … an end-to-end community.” Cameron added that with this film, they were “pushing limits even farther with high frame rate, higher resolution 3D and greater reality in our visual effects." He went on to say, "I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution, and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off.”

It has been more than a year since the first Avatar film was released. The film became a huge commercial success and was the highest-grossing film worldwide for nearly a decade until Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019. The title was reclaimed following the China reissue in 2021. The success of the film led to Cameron signing four sequels with 20th Century Fox. The filming of the second and third sequel is already complete.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to release on December 16, 2022. Since it has been a while, the studio will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. The trailer for the second film will be out next week. By May 4, we will be seeing the trailer for the new film that will run exclusively in cinemas along with Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

To add to the hype surrounding the film is Saldana's testimony of the film, "I was able to see just 20 minutes of the second installment right before the year ended last year and I was speechless...I was moved to tears. One thing nobody really knows about Jim is that Jim is also a big crier. He really has a heart of gold, and he is a firm man and he's very focused, but he does have a very delicate heart which is why he protects it so much. I think he's able to have an outlet through the stories that he creates and this story is going to be compelling. Avatar 2 is definitely a leap from Avatar 1. I think you really have to brace yourself for it, but it's going to be an adventure that you will not forget."
