'Atlanta' is finally moving forward with seasons 3 and 4 after long hiatus. Filming for the upcoming season has finally begun!
This article was recently reviewed and is up to date as of April 7, 2021.
Donald Glover's comedy-drama series, 'Atlanta,' has been renewed nearly three years ago, but we still have not seen new episodes until now.
The award-winning series released its second season on March 1, 2018, and aired the last episode on May 10, 2018.
The renewal for season 3 followed shortly on June 07, 2018.
So what exactly happened? Here is everything we know.
Season 3 is just getting delayed, but you can rest assured that FX has not changed its mind about the renewal.
In January 2020, FX announced that the season 3 episode count was increased to 10 episodes from the original announcement of 8. At that time, they were planning to release Seasons 3 and 4 in 2021.
The initial plan is to film both seasons simultaneously, and that season 3 will air early in 2021, and season 4 will follow later that year. They were also looking forward to filming one of the seasons outside the United States, presumably Europe, to pick things up where the story left in season 2.
Unfortunately, production for both seasons was postponed in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On February 17, 2021, THR reported that production for seasons 3 and 4 would begin in March 2021 and will be filmed back-to-back.
In April 2021, we finally had a confirmation from Donald Glover that filming for season 3 has finally begun.
The 37-year-old actor posted a photo of himself together with co-stars Lakeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz, and Brian Tyree Henry.
There is no release date available yet, but knowing that filming has finally begun, we might see season 3 in early 2022. Perhaps, season 4 will also drop later that same year. We will update this space once we get new information.
Plot details for season 3 remain scarce as of the moment, but it will likely pick up right where season 2 left off.
The previous season ended with Earn, Alfred, and Clark County on a plane bound for a European tour after Earn planted a gun in Clark's bag that Clark then planted on his manager Lucas.
Before the pandemic, the team was planning to film part of season 3 in Europe to continue the narrative. We were initially worried if the production team will be able to pursue the original plan with the current global situation.
Fortunately, in March 2021, Deadline reported that the cast and crew are headed to Europe to shoot seasons 3 and 4.
Shooting will begin in London and will move to Amsterdam and then Paris.
Back in November 2020, creator Donald Glover assured us that it's going to be worth the wait, telling Twitter that “‘atlanta’ s3+s4 are going to be some of the best television ever made. sopranos only ones who can touch us.”
Our series regulars will most likely come back. We are expecting to see Donald Glover again as Earnest "Earn" Marks, together with Brian Tyree Henry as Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles, Lakeith Stanfield as Darius Epps, and Zazie Beetz as Vanessa Keefer, among others.
The rest of the season 3 cast members, who are likely to return, include Khris Davis as Tracy and RJ Walker as Clark County.
There will probably be new guest stars in the upcoming seasons, but we are yet to find out the official list.
There is no trailer yet. But with the cameras already rolling, the wait should not be that long anymore.
We will leave you with the season 2 trailer for now, but rest assured, we will update this space once the official trailer for season 3 gets released.
We already know that seasons 3 and 4 are confirmed and are about to start production. If that's not enough, you'd be glad to know that FX is keen on renewing the show again and again, as long as Glover is interested.
“As long as (Glover) wants to do more Atlanta, we will do more Atlanta,” FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf told Deadline back in January 2020.
