A Hollywood movie producer verified what many Aquaman fans anticipated by discussing the debate over recasting Amber Heard as Mera.
Heard initially played the DC Comics character in 2018, with Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry.
The film got mixed reviews, scoring 66 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, although it convinced producers to bring Momoa back for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023.
Heard returned for the sequel, but her short appearances were rumored to be related to her defamation lawsuit with Johnny Depp, 61.
Speaking during the trial, Heard testified: “I fought hard to stay in the movie. They didn’t want to include me in the film. I was given a script and then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it.
“That depicted my character and another character, without giving any spoilers away, two characters fighting with one another.”
“They basically took a bunch out of my role,” she added. “They just removed a bunch.”
Walter Hamada, former president of DC Studios, refuted that Warner Bros. deleted Heard’s sequences from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and said the lawsuit with Depp had not affected her involvement.
Instead, Hamada said Heard’s return was thrown into question due to an issue between her and Momoa.
He claimed: “They didn’t really have a lot of chemistry together. The reality is, it’s not uncommon in movies for two leads to not have chemistry.”
Aquaman watchers noted this ‘lack of chemistry’ on Twitter.
One says: “Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom review: Amber Heard only has a few lines, the audience dislikes her and the tension/lack of chemistry between her and Jason Momoa translated to the screen.”
Hamada said during the trial that ‘movie magic and editorial’ may produce a fantastic on-screen relationship, but it takes ‘lot of effort to get there’.
Though first hesitant, Heard returned to the film, which garnered an 81 percent on Rotten Tomaotes’ ‘Popcornometer’. However, critics gave the film a 34% rating.
Heard reprised Mera in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.
