Jason Mamoa is strapping on his tights once again in Warner Bros.' most successful DCEU franchise right above Wonder Woman. And we've got all the information that you need to now to prepare you for its eventual release
Aquaman 2 is confirmed and production has already begun. Warner Bros. announced that the sequel is set to hit theaters December 16, 2022. Yes, I know, it's more than three years away. The reason for the huge delay is the already big lineup of DC films already set to be released. Some of these include 'Joker', 'Birds of Prey' and 'Wonder Woman 1984'. Warner Bros. has their hands full with all these other big films so Aquaman 2 fans will have to wait a little while. But, at least we know that it is coming and that's the important thing.
As of now the plot for the sequel is either being kept under wraps or not yet determined. The first film, which was released on December 7th, 2018, was about Authur Curry fighting to claim his rightful place as Lord of Atlantis, defeating Orm. We can only suspect, based on the comics, that Black Manta will play a bigger villainous role in the sequel as he is among Aquaman's greatest foes.
We will most likely see Aquaman in his early days as Lord of Atlantis and some of the politics that is involved. In the comics, King Nereus is sometimes a villain so I won't be surprised if he tries something sneaky.
Another thing to consider is that the main villains from the first film are still alive. Aquaman spared Orm's life and in the mid-credits scene Black Manta is rescued by Dr. Stephen Shin and he seems very determined to find and destroy Aquaman. There are a lot of baddies for Aquaman to face off against and we may even be introduced to a few new ones.
We know for a fact that Jason Mamoa will be returning to reprise his role as Aquaman. He's so excited to reprise his role that he even pitched an idea for the sequel to Warner Bros. while they were filming the first movie. We also know that Amber Heard will be back to play his love interest Mera. The other big names expected to return are Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Yahya Abdul-Mateen as Black Manta and Dolph Lundgren as Nereus.
James Wan will be returning to direct the sequel based on a script by co-writer duo, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, and Will Beall
Warner Bros. is reportedly developing an Aquaman spin-off horror film based on the Trench. The Trench is one of the kingdoms of Atlantis that was seen in the first Aquaman film. We don't know much about the film at the moment but we do know that it will be in production alongside Aquaman 2.
