"He was my friend. And he lived next door, quite literally next door," Heard stated on the stand.
Amber Heard was questioned during the trial about inviting James Franco to her place a day before filing for divorce.
Depp's lawyer Camille Vasquez asked why Heard "felt comfortable having James Franco over the evening of May 22, 2016." The Aquaman actress responded, "I do not know when James came over." To this, Vasquez decided to show the elevator surveillance footage of Heard and Franco in court. "Okay, let's remind you," she said and then proceeded to play elevator surveillance footage of Heard and Franco from May 22, 2016, at about 11 p.m. They were on their way up to her penthouse. Heard confirmed the same. On May 23, 2016, she filed for divorce.

"He was my friend. And he lived next door, quite literally next door," the 36-year-old stated." And I, frankly, had exhausted my support network with my usual friends and was happy to welcome as much friendship at that time as I could possibly get." In the video, Franco could be seen with a hat and backpack, leaning on Heard to place his head on her shoulder. Heard reciprocated the action as well. Heard also stated that she was close friends with Franco, with whom she has worked in films. She testified that Depp disapproved of their friendship and accused her of having affairs with him.
"[Johnny] was mad at me for taking the job with James Franco," Heard said. "He hated James Franco and was already accusing me of kind of secretly having a thing with him in my past since we had done Pineapple Express together." She also detailed how Depp wanted to control the roles she played and how she played them. “He had already been upset with me and accused me in many arguments about not telling him about scenes that I had, if I had a kissing scene," she claimed. "Any sort of romantic scene, and [if] I wasn’t explicit about what I was going to do, then I was accused of having withheld information and hiding it from him. So I didn’t want the fight, of course, I didn’t want the argument, but I had to kind of eggshell tiptoe around how to tell him when I had any sort of scene like that."
Previously in court, Heard shared the events that led her to finally file for divorce. She said that she just wanted a “good night’s sleep” when she filed for the restraining order. "I was conflicted. I knew after he threw the phone at my face…I knew I had to leave him,” Heard explained. “I knew I didn’t, I knew I would likely not literally survive. I was so scared that it was going to end really badly for me. I really didn’t want to leave him, I loved him so much. But I couldn’t stay.” Speaking about the trial itself she added, “I was begging Johnny to not make me prove what I am sitting here having to prove to all of you today. Everything I said then, everything I’ve said to date is the truth. I don’t want anything from him, just don’t call me a liar."

Franco has been brought up as part of the trial before as well. His involvement was brought to light during the libel case against The Sun by Depp. Heard said during the other trial that Franco was riding with her in the elevator of the apartment building she had shared with Depp. "We were talking," Heard said of the conversation they had. "He was saying to me, 'Oh my God, what happened to you?'" This was before she filed for a restraining order against Depp for domestic violence.
