Amazon Finally Drops 'Lord of the Rings' TV Series Synopsis

Amazon's 'Lord of the Rings' prequel series looks "precious".

Gollum- Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

The epic 'Lord of the Rings' saga is finally coming to our homes through Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon announced that they acquired the TV rights to 'Lord of The Rings' three years ago, and after a long wait, they finally dropped the official show synopsis.

Here is the official synopsis, courtesy of TheOneRing.net.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Aside from the show's synopsis reveal, Amazon also treated us to a teaser map announcing the Second Age of Middle-earth, which takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

The map introduced us to a new place called Numenor. The place has never been mentioned in the previous film adaptations and it looks like it will be among the central location for the television series.

It's worth noting that Amazon's adaptation is actually a prequel instead of a retelling of the trilogy of books, so we're expecting to see new places and characters along the way.

Amazon is planning to run at least 5 seasons (with 8 to 10 episodes per season) of the television adaptation.

Filming for seasons 1 and 2 has already begun, and we already have initial casting details.

Cynthia Assai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Lenny Henry, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, August Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, and Sara Zwangobani, are joining the cast members among several others.

J.A. Bayona

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona will helm the 2-part pilot episode based on J. R. R. Tolkien's novels. He will also serve as an executive producer, alongside partner Belén Atienza.

Speaking about his role in the upcoming series, Bayona said he is honored to join the team.

“J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team,” Bayona said in a statement via THR.

“I can’t wait to take audiences around the world back to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never-before-seen story.”
