It has finally been confirmed that a third installment of Ace Ventura is in the works nearly two decades after the second film was released.
Ace Ventura is the titular character of the film franchise and the animated series. The original character was created by screenwriter Jack Bernstein and follows the criminal investigations of the comedic pet detective. The first film in the franchise came out in 1994, with Jim Carrey portraying the character. This film is credited for launching Carrey's career as an actor in Hollywood. A sequel of the film, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, was released the following year, and although it did not do as well, it was a success. It was followed by one more release, a spin-off home video movie, Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective, in 2009.
In 2019, there was speculation that a third Ace Ventura movie was in the works. But it was finally confirmed that a third installment is in the works nearly two decades after the second film was released. Here's everything you need to know about it.
The actual details of the project are still under wraps, but if it is anything like the earlier films, it is about to be a wild ride yet again. Ace must still be passionate about finding and rescuing animals while another adventure awaits. The project is still in the pre-production stages, but more details about the film will be made available in the days to come.
"We're pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise - it's noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamoring for a 3rd installment," the Morgan Creek Entertainment team told Park Circus. "During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories."
The revival of the franchise is happening as a joint-venture production within Warner Bros. Pictures, Morgan Creek, Amazon Studios, and Prime Video Original Films. Carrey will be reunited with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller yet again after their work together on Sonic the Hedgehog reported Collider. It is still unclear what the film is going to be about, so no other character or actor has been confirmed yet.
But Jim Carrey recently spoke to E! News about whether he will return to the franchise to star. He said:
I think after the fact when there's been a lot of years, unless some genius person, director, auteur comes to you with a completely new take on what's going on, you know. If Chris Nolan came to me and said 'I want to make Ace Ventura real and I want to do something, you know, something more interesting...' then I might listen. But for the most part, you know, after a certain time there's not one cell in your body that is that person anymore so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days and the original inspiration isn't there.
Because it is a collaboration among Warner Bros. Pictures, Morgan Creek, Amazon Studios, and Prime Video Original Films, there are reportedly plans for the third Ace Ventura film to be released simultaneously theatrically and via streaming as an Amazon Prime Video exclusive. But it is unclear when the release will take place. We can hope for a late 2023 or 2024 release.
