In the Netflix press conference, it was stated that the 20 episode series was a collective work between a Taiwanese television company, KBro and another called Good Image.
In September 2018, Netflix released 'A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities' (or 雙城故事). The series is about two women from Taipei and San Francisco, who switch places. Something similar to the famous Charles Dickens and his classic masterpiece 'The Tale Of Two Cities'. The book was published in 1859 and became one of the favorites amongst storytellers and enthusiastic readers. The modern take on the Dicken's classic novel is a Netflix Original, “A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities”.
Fans get to see exciting stories of two main characters of the series— a Taipei doctor, Li Nien-Nien, an attractive young woman and a San Francisco engineer, Josephine Huang, a beautiful woman of around the same age as Nien-Nien. Both these characters swap their homes and dare each other to embark on each other's journey of life, filled with challenges, secrets and unexpected moments. Going with how Netflix describes the show, “The series features cross-cultural differences and similarities between Taipei and the close-knit Taiwanese-American community in San Francisco.”
The series is directed by Tien-Lun Yeh and is written by Chia-Hui Lin, Tan-Ching Yeh and Tien-Lun Yeh. Tien-Lun Yeh is famous for his films like 'Night Market Hero' and another TV drama called 'Far and Away'. The series is produced by Chieh Pan, Chin-Sheng Yeh and Tan-Ching Yeh. The first series was aired in Singapore before airing globally on Netflix. “A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities, with its universal appeal, is more than just a collaboration with Netflix — it’s an opportunity for Taiwan content creators on the world stage,” Yeh told Netflix. Looking at the show's stardom, it wouldn't be unjust to say that there might be a second series coming soon!
After a year of shooting, season 1 of the series was aired on September 3, 2018. In a press conference held in 2017, Netflix itself said that the series was made to appreciate the Taiwanese American culture. In the same Netflix press conference, it was stated that the 20 episode series was a collective work between a Taiwanese television company, KBro and another called Good Image. Season 1 finale was aired in January, therefore, the director Yeh and his team will need more time to come to the conclusion, as to when will they come back with another energy-filled season. We can expect the second season to be full of sentimental dialogues, sweet characters and full of adventure.
John Derderian, Director of International Originals at Netflix, mirrored Yeh’s sentiments in the press release, saying: “We are excited about A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities bringing the multi-cultural worlds of Taiwan and America to our 104 million members across 190 countries. This is a testament to how great stories travel.”
The second season of the drama might star Tammy Chen as Nien Nien, Peggy Tseng as Josephine Huang, Denny Huang as a popular Chef Ryan, Shao-Hua Lung and Fang Wan as Nien-Nien's father and mother respectively. We might also have Jacqueline Gourlay Grant in the role of Mrs. Thomason and Sheng-Hao Wen as Tien-Ming.
Other actors who might make their comeback in season 2 are Michael J. Gwynn, who played the role of a Yoga Class Attendee in the first season, Mei-Ling Lo, John Lobato, Li-Yin Yang, Corey Semple. However, everything can be confirmed only when season 2 is officially renewed.
