We now have some exciting news about the upcoming season that we can’t wait to share with you! Read on to discover everything that will happen in The Society season 2.
Will The Society Season 2 Happen?
The good news was announced by Netflix on July 9, 2019, that ‘The Society’ is getting renewed. An official release date was not announced by Netflix, and on April 2nd, 2020, Deadline revealed that the series is set to return in late 2020. The fandom was overjoyed and highly anticipated the new season. But on August 21st, 2020, Netflix made the bitter announcement via Deadline that the decision had been reversed, and the show was canceled.
Why Was ‘The Society’ Canceled?
The show’s production was initially halted due to COVID-19 and was set to resume soon. The cast even mentioned that they were prepping themselves to get back to work. But the COVID situation may have ballooned the cost of production, prompting Netflix to reverse the decision.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society, and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix told Deadline.
“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment, for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, cast and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.”
Deadline also states that: “uncertainty around production dates and balancing the availabilities of a large cast like The Society, coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID, led to the decisions on The Society.”
What The Showrunner Had To Say About The Cancellation
“This wasn’t a normal cancellation. This wasn’t about not having the audience or we didn’t believe in it anymore. There was a global crisis that changed all of our lives in the one year we were able to make it,” says creator Christopher Keyser, per Variety
“It really feels like this thing that we loved and were ready for was taken away more than anything I’ve ever done. That’s true for the writers and Marc Webb, with whom I made the show. There’s a sense that it stopped in mid-animation, but we knew a lot of what was going to happen on the other side,” he says. “There’s also the emotional thing going on with the audience reaching out to us and consistently saying, ‘Tell me what happened. When is it coming back?’ It was particularly poignant for us since we were closer than I think most shows get to being ready to go again.”
A graphic novel that would have continued the story from season 1 was almost published by Keyser and his creative partners, but the publisher went out of business. The writers are still working out how to take the plot in a different direction.
“I have consistent conversations with a bunch of the writers and Marc Webb about how we might bring this back in some way. We don’t have an answer yet, and I wouldn’t count on it, but I don’t do that with every show that gets canceled,” Keyser says. “The audience still wants to talk about it. They are still moved by it and want answers to the questions and then new questions are posed. I just don’t know whether the world is going to work in a way that aligns for us, but we’ll keep trying for a while because it’s gotten under my skin as well.”
“Thank you for not letting the show go,” he says. “Things only live for a certain amount of time, and that’s just as long as people remember them. If this gets remembered, there’s not much else that people who make something for an audience can ask for.”
‘The Society’ Season 1 Recap
So to recap, this series revolves around a group of high school teenagers who embark on an unexpected supernatural turn of events. They were supposed to head out on a field trip, but because they couldn’t make their way over to their destination, they decided to head back. However, upon returning home, something bizarre came afoot; their entire hometown was suddenly deserted. It’s up to them to figure out what’s going on and try to get through with the way things are now.
What Was The Potential Plot For ‘The Society’ Season 2?
So far, after the first season capped off, we got a little more of an understanding of how the universe of The Society came to be, but some questions still need answering. We also got to see how the main characters are now working together to make the best of their dire situation. From what transpired in the first season, the coup was successfully executed, which saw the removal of Allie and Will from their leadership positions. But even though Lexie is heading the coup, it’s unclear whether she’s ready to take up leadership responsibilities.
Now for the bigger, more concerning questions, there are plenty of theories to play around with. Some of those theories include a duplicate town theory, an alternate universe theory, or perhaps a social experiment. But some of those theories contradict the others. Some of the developments we got that lean toward the alternate universe theory include the solar eclipse occurring at the wrong time. The origin of the smell was never explored, and then there’s the fact that a coin doesn’t land on heads. We can only assume that Cassandra lied about the last coin toss.
There were also a couple of scenes that showed a younger group of kids and adults still alive. We hope to see more character development and those relationships continue to build heading into the second season. According to showrunner Chris Keyser, season 2 will be majorly focusing on the terrible trio. “I think there’s an interesting—and pretty timely—question about what happens if you give people who are entirely unfit for office the chance to run, and they make it,” said Keyser. “So we have a good sense of what the arc of season 2 will be.”
Continuing the same interview with Hollywood Reporter, Keyser said that the second season would be more about social class and race topics. “This season deals a lot with men versus women, and it deals only briefly with race, but I think you can expect that conversation about class and race to keep coming up,” Keyser said. “All these things need to be relitigated in a world in which there are no givens. We hope, over time, and if we’re lucky enough to get a season 2, to explore all the social contract questions that we take for granted.”
According to Toby Wallace, who plays the role of Campbell, he will not be in power for long in the second season. “The way things end in the show, there’s quite a lot of potential for the shift in power and a shift in kind of alliances between characters, including the relationship between me and Elle and various other characters,” said Toby. “I think Campbell’s mission to get power, as successful as he seems to be, will probably fall at some point.”
On the other hand, Jack Mulhern, who plays the role of Grizz and is a newly crowned internet boyfriend, spoke with The Metro and said that fans really want to see the reconciliation happening between Sam (Sean Berdy). “I think the fans are clamoring for it, so I think there will be reconciliation, I’m sure,” he said. “I would be interested to see the dynamic with the kid,” he continues. “That’s going to be potential for humor, the potential for drama. I think that the kid thrown into the situation is probably at the center of the world from my perspective going forward.”
