Gilmore Girls A Year in the Life Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Fans had high expectations for the mother-daughter pair in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life when it was released on Netflix in 2016. The miniseries took place almost ten years after the original Gilmore Girls series ended, and fans found it hard to contain their excitement. However, some were disappointed with how the revival concluded, as it left many questions unanswered. As a result, fans have been eagerly hoping for a renewal. Here is everything we know about it.

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Season 2 False Release Dates

There was a rumor circulating that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2 would be released in November 2021. However, that rumor has been proven false, as that date has already passed. The truth is that the mini-series has not been renewed and may not return for more seasons. A similar rumor circulated in 2020 when IMDB listed the second season with a November 2020 release date. The listing for season 2 has since been removed, causing confusion among fans. However, no second season was ever released.

Will There Be  ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Season 2?

Let’s get straight to the point; there’s a high chance that the show will no longer return for season 2. First, the show was billed as a limited series, and limited series usually don’t get renewed despite ending in a cliffhanger.

In May 2021, Kelly Bishop, who played Emily Gilmore, appeared in an interview with Town and Country to promote her new Netflix show, Halston. During the interview, the talks redirected to her iconic matriarch role in Gilmore Girls.

When asked if she would be willing to play the role again when given the opportunity, the actress said yes, but added that she thinks it might no longer happen.

“Yes, I would. But we’ve already kind of done that with those four extra episodes. And I honestly think it’s very unlikely that kind of a situation could be pulled together because so many of the important actors in it, they’ve all gone their separate ways and have other projects and other things to do. It would have to be like a continuation of those four extra episodes, but I just don’t see it happening. And I don’t see Amy being interested in it because Mrs. Maisel is such a huge hit and deservedly so. I just don’t see her wanting to go back and revisit it. We all loved it, and there might be some opportunity, but it doesn’t seem too likely. But sure, I’d play her again. I’d love to.”

What Does The Original Cast Have To Say About The Renewal?

From creators to actors, here’s what they have to say about the renewal:

The creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, told THR, “We pitched this as close-ended. We pitched it as: ‘This is the year in the life. This is the way it was ending.’. . . Netflix and Warner Bros., we all went into this sort of saying that this was it. So there really haven’t been any more discussions about: Is there going to be anything else? I don’t know.”

The co-executive producer, Daniel Palladino, told Vulture, “Nothing’s been discussed. This was kind of set as a one-off thing, but we would never have anticipated that we were going to do this up until a couple of years ago when it occurred to us. So we never say never. It wasn’t designed to go beyond this, but it certainly can go beyond this.”

Lauren Graham teased and left fans wondering after she said, “The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, don’t you think?” On the other hand, Alexis Bledel, in an interview with ET, said, “It all depends on the story. And I don’t know, I feel so grateful to get to do [Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life] that I’m not even looking forward necessarily at the prospect of doing more. I also feel like it’s such a special story that I don’t want to exploit it or do too much, you know?”

Even Scott Patterson is ready for more, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, “It’d be nice to do it every year,” he said. “Maybe every two years, do a three-month thing, do four more chapters. It was easy to do. It was fun. It was really rewarding, and people got a sense that if this was going to be the last thing that we now have some closure.”

In March 2017, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed to TVLine that he had spoken to Team Palladino about a sequel to A Year in the Life. “We obviously loved the success of the show [and] fans loved how well it was done; it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but [Amy and Dan] sure delivered, and people were really excited about more. And we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.”

A recent update about the show’s second season may have added some fuel to the fire. On Feb. 1, 2020, during the 2020 Writer’s Guild Awards in New York City, Gilmore Girls co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino mentioned that she is open to another reboot. When she was asked about the possibility of brand new episodes, she said:

“You know, it’s the kind of thing where we hadn’t planned on doing the Netflix movies. Never say never.”

She went on to say that she’d want the original cast to return, and it would have to be “the right time for everybody.” She added that Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Kelly Bishop were all interested in doing the new series in 2016, saying, “It was like, the moment where Lauren’s like, ‘Hmmm,’ and Alexis’ like, ‘Hmmm,’ and Kelly’s like, ‘Hmmm.’ So we all just did it.”

Then, in a later interview during a Woodstock Film Festival virtual panel discussion, Amy Sherman-Palladino spoke about the possibility of the new season. She said:

“There’s no [obstacle] behind it except for lives and people doing [other] things.”

“[2016 season A Year in the Life] was one of those kismet moments where we were kind of all looking at each other and going, ‘Well, let’s take a couple of months and hang out together and remind each other why we drove each other crazy. And it was a wonderful experience. I really do believe that if the time is right and the girls are where they need to be in their lives [it could happen].”

“Lauren [Graham] is in two series right now,” Sherman-Palladino continued, referring to Graham’s roles in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Disney+’ Mighty Ducks. “And Alexis [Bledel] is in Handmaid’s Tale. They all have things… But if that [kismet] moment presents itself again, [we’d do it] in a hot second.”

Lauren Graham Had A Meeting With Amy Sherman-Palladino Recently

But the rumor mill got going again in November 2022 when Lauren Graham mentioned in an interview about her New Book to New Beauty that she was scheduled to have a meeting with Amy Sherman-Palladino. She said:

“I’m making plans to see Amy [Sherman-Palladino], the creator of the show, in the next few weeks. It’s always a fun prospect to think about and talk about. It used to be more of just talk, but having done it now, we know it’s possible. I think I feel such a responsibility and so much love for the story that I would just want to be sure it was the right time.”

We don’t currently know exactly what they spoke about in the meeting but given that they spoke about Gilmore Girls, it’s a positive sign for the show. We will update this space when any new information is released.

What Is The Possible Release Date Of ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Season 2

There hasn’t been any authentic news about the second part being under production. All we can do is speculate on the release date without evidence to back it up. So, for now, we’ll leave it blank and say that we don’t know.

After the Gilmore Girls revival premiere, Netflix left fans pondering with a cryptic tweet that teased the possibility of ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2’. The tweet had a picture from a previous episode of April, in which Luke’s daughter conducted a science fair project to find out who her father is. The tweet showcased two different men who could possibly have fathered Rory’s baby.

Recent reports suggest that Logan is obviously the father but showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino replied with “no comment”.

Who Will Return For The Second Installment?

If it is definitely for sure that the second installment is on board, and if it really happens, then most likely, the original cast will return. Lauren Graham (Lorelai) revealed to TVLine in April 2017 that she’d “play that character until my dying day.”
