Mamma Mia! Here we go again! How can we resist the third film?
Let us be honest. There is nothing quite like hearing and seeing the legendary ABBA songs being performed by brilliant stars on a dreamy island, off the gorgeous Grecian coast.
The first film was released in 2008 and a sequel followed a decade after.
Since then, the jukebox musical has amassed a number of awards, not to mention breaking several international box office records.
So, after two successful films, will there be more? Let’s find out.
Will There Be A Third ‘Mamma Mia!’ Film?
A third ‘Mamma Mia!’ film is happening, and the producers were supposed to start working on it before Covid bogged the film and television industry.
“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog,” producer Judy Craymer told The Daily Mail in mid-June, 2020.
Craymer added that ‘Mamma Mia!’ is meant to be a trilogy, and she knows that Universal would like her to do a third film.
“Mamma Mia 3, let’s go baby,” Amanda Seyfried told ABC News, crossing her fingers for luck. “Everybody says it’s gonna happen. But I mean, I haven’t seen a script.”
The second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was released in 2018 and was a big hit grossing nearly $400 million worldwide. Hence, there’s enough motivation to proceed with the threequel.
What Will ‘Mama Mia!’ 3 Be All About?
Warning: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again spoilers ahead.
In the latest addition to the ‘Mama Mia!’ franchise, we were introduced to Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried), her mother Donna (played by Meryl Streep), and a group of former lovers and friends who gathered in Greece to celebrate Sophie’s wedding to Sky (played by Dominic Cooper). Through flashbacks, Sophie mourned her mother’s passing while her friends shared heartwarming stories of her life.
The sequel took us on a journey back in time with Lily James portraying a young Donna and unraveling the tale of how she met her lovers. After learning about her mother’s bravery during her own pregnancy, Sophie, now expecting a child, felt a deeper connection to her late mother.
Furthermore, we were introduced to Cher, who played the enigmatic and sophisticated-looking Ruby, Donna’s estranged mother. Sophie gave birth to a baby boy and celebrated the grand opening of her mother’s dream, a renovated hotel named Hotel Bella Donna.
The potential for a third installment of ‘Mama Mia!’ is exciting. It would be a pleasure to see Sophie as a devoted mother, exploring the beautiful Grecian coast with her son. With the introduction of Donna’s mother in the second film, fans are eagerly waiting to learn more about Donna and Ruby’s relationship and how Ruby and Fernando met.
Who Would Be In The Cast Of ‘Mama Mia!’ 3?
The whole cast members are likely to return, Seyfried revealed back in June last year.
“Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Seyfried told Collider.
“That’s what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an island in Croatia?”
Seyfried said Carpenter could “technically” play Sophie’s daughter in a sequel after Carpenter sung ABBA’s title hit at a Madison Square Garden concert.
After Cher played Meryl Streep’s mom in the previous film, the interviewer noticed that “age is sort of a forgettable construct” in the franchise, even though Seyfried is just 13 years older than Carpenter.
“You’re right, actually, [it] doesn’t matter,” said Seyfried. “You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be. … I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan.”
When Will ‘Mama Mia!’ 3 Release?
Currently, no official statements have been made regarding the highly anticipated third installment of the beloved jukebox musical film, despite the eagerness of its producers and cast. As a result, any information regarding potential release dates remains unavailable at this time.
What Songs Will The Third Film Use?
‘Mama Mia!’ will not be the same if they will not feature ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Super Trooper’, so we can expect the same songs, albeit a different rendition for the third film.
It will be a little challenging for the third film though, considering there’s only a handful of songs from the legendary music group to left cover the third film.
“I don’t think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie. Because we’d have to use ‘Super Trooper’ again and we’d have to use ‘Mamma Mia’ again and have to use them in a different way,” Seyfried told Collider.
Luckily, ABBA announced in 2018 that they are reuniting again to write new songs, which they were hoping to release in 2020, but then Covid struck. This would be the first time for the group to write new songs since their disbandment in 1983.
