‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2: Everything We Know So Far

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt‘s sci-fi film ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ did pretty well at the box office, grossing an impressive $370 million on a $178 million budget. The results weren’t stellar but definitely enough to secure a sequel, which has been reportedly in the works. Warner Bros. has hired new writer Matthew Robinson who was said to have impressed the studio with his ideas for the sequel. However, a recent update seemed to have shattered our hopes. Here is everything we know so far about ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2, which is set to be called ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’.

When Is The Release Date Of ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2?

No official release date has been confirmed for the sequel, nor is there any information regarding when filming will begin. What’s even sadder is Emily Blunt’s recent update on the sequel.

In May 2021, the actress appeared in an interview with Howard Stern, and said that she thinks that the sequel might no longer happen, citing financial reasons and conflict in schedules.

“We wanted to. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make,” Blunt said.

The script has long been finished. Blunt confirmed that she’s already read the script and said that it was “amazing” and in great shape. However, she is already doubtful that the movie will go forward.

“That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now,” Blunt shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t have the straight answer on that one.”

Previously, the studio was waiting for Tom Cruise to finish filming Mission Impossible 7 and 8, which was supposed to be filmed back to back in 2020.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the filming suffered setbacks. In February 2021, it was announced that they will no longer be filming the two movies back-to-back as planned after they finished production for Mission Impossible 7.

Blunt and Cruise’s schedule never seems to meet. At the times that Tom Cruise was ready, Emily Blunt was busy.

“They asked me to do [it] two months before I started Mary Poppins. Tom [Cruise] was like, ‘Can you go this autumn?’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t go, I’m playing Mary Poppins for like a year, dude! I can’t do Edge of Tomorrow’,” Emily Blunt said.

Tom Cruise only shoots one film a year, and we expected that ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2 will begin filming in 2022 if he is unable to finish his current movies last year. However, both actors have so much on their plate, even the concept of having an Edge of Tomorrow sequel now seems like a distant wish.

So, the film is still somewhat a long way away, but 2025 seems most possible (if miracles happen and the two star’s schedules will align).

The last time we heard of the film was in January 2020 when the director revealed his planning stages on Instagram. It’s been radio silence since then.

What Is The Plot Of ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2?

The script is complete, but the story has yet to be revealed. In an interview, director Doug Liman spoke about the sequel saying: “first of all the story is so amazing — much better than the original film, and I loved the original film — and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

“If I’m going to do a sequel for the first time in my life, I want to make it the opposite of what you’d expect from a sequel, and we found a story that does that.”

Liman also mentioned that a third major character would be added to the story, but very few details have been released about said character.

Who Is In The Cast Of ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ 2?

Edge Of Tomorrow Cast

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are said to be returning for the sequel, but it has yet to be confirmed. The two leads will not sign on to the sequel until they like the script. Also, as mentioned earlier, a third major character is expected to join the cast but has yet to be cast. Sadly, Bill Paxton passed away in 2017, so there is a possibility that his character, Master Sergeant Farell, will be recast.
