‘Queen Sono’ Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Queen Sono was among the most promising international titles that dropped on Netflix in recent years. Although others accused the series of blaxploitation, the audience thought it was refreshing to finally see a sultry and strong black female lead who can battle it out like James Bond. But where is Queen Sono now?

Has Queen Sono Been Renewed For Season 2?

Renewal Status: Cancelled/Renewal Reversed

Well, yes, but then Netflix changed its mind. In April 2020, Netflix officially renewed the show for season 2 after a highly-successful debut. The first season provided a lot of avenues for a follow-up season, so fans were already speculating that Queen Sono’s saga would have a continuation. Fans were ecstatic to find out that their speculations were indeed true. Sadly, on November 26, 2020, Netflix had to take back its decision due to the pandemic. The production challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic forced the streamer to pull the plug on the series.

The first season of Queen Sono arrived on Netflix on April 28, 2020. After its initial renewal, the second season was set to begin filming in late 2020. Sadly, initial plans did not push through due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As of this update, there are no reports that Netflix is planning to pick up Queen Sono again. Hence, don’t expect to see Queen Sono season 2 anymore.

What Could’ve Been Queen Sono Season 2 Be About?

Queen Sono follows the story of an African secret agent who works for the Special Operations Group (SOG). Highly skilled in combat and with surpassing intelligence, Queen set out to fight evil crime groups who wish to terrorize South Africa. But behind this strong facade is a child deeply engrossed in trauma after witnessing her mother’s assassination. The first season only has six episodes, not to mention a cliffhanging ending deducing fans to believe that the second season will be more intense. If only the show got renewed, we were expecting to see the feud between Queen and Ekaterina grow deeper. Although Queen was able to stop Ekaterina from taking over South Africa, the Russian heiress to a crime family is determined to come back.

“Going forward, I’m expecting things to get even more tough and emotional,” Queen actress Pearl Thusi told Entertainment Weekly. “If we get another season, if we go forward, I’m expecting things to be a lot more difficult for her than ever before. I think this is just the beginning. It was just the preparation.”

The mysterious killer behind Queen’s mother’s death has also not been revealed yet, so we were expecting to see it unfold in the next season. Thusi spoke about whether we will get any information regarding her mother’s death in season 2 with EW. She said:

“I think discovering the truth is only the beginning. Coming to terms with the truth is an entirely different journey. There were some truths I discovered after my mother died, come to think of it, that took me years to deal with, so I think it echoes that type of truth. There’s definitely a renewed sense of loss, and not only because Mazet has passed on, but because Queen is dealing with a different understanding of her own mother’s death. The truth is only the beginning, it’s how Queen deals with it and how to continue a legacy something that we can continue to explore.”

We also saw Queen’s father in the finale, which will no doubt, have a part to play in the progression of season 2.

“I have no clue what the writers are/were cooking up for him,” Thusi added. “I’d be very excited to explore that.”

Unfortunately, all these questions will remain unanswered now that the show is canceled.

Which Cast Member Could’ve Returned For Queen Sono Season 2?

We were expecting to see the lead actress Pearl Thusi reprise her role as Queen Sono. We saw Queen’s grandmother Mazet (Abigail Kubeka) assassinated by Ekaterina in season one, so it is unlikely for her to return unless through flashbacks. Other cast members that we expected to see are Vuyo Dabula as Shandu, Khathu Ramabulana as William, Kate Liquorish as Ekatarina, Enhle Maphumulo as Nova, Loyiso Madinga as Fred, Sechaba Morojele as Dr. Sid, and Chi Mhende as Miri among others.
