Although the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 smash movie Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, released earlier this month, the buzz surrounding the picture soon died down.
Some disappointed attendees even left the theaters, so it’s safe to say the picture underwhelmed. It has a terrible 32% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Variety, the sequel’s first two weeks of release brought in $51.5 million in the US and $165 million worldwide, proving that it was a financial disaster at the box office.
By the time it leaves cinemas, Joker 2 is projected to have only made $65 million domestically and $210 million to $215 million worldwide.
According to reports, the film cost $200 million to create, with a another $100 million going toward marketing and distribution on a global scale. These figures pose a serious challenge for Warner Bros. Although Warner Bros. had certainly hoped for a substantial profit, sources close to the company have expressed optimism that the film will break even, according to Variety.
A large number of moviegoers expressed their dissatisfaction with Joker: Folie à Deux on social media after its release.
One user expressed their frustration on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Giving Joker 2 a go because a) the first one was decent and b) I thought the reviews would surely be dramatic… F**k me. Do NOT let your curiosity make you watch it. It’s genuinely the worst film I have ever watched.”
Another echoed similar feelings, stating, “I watched Joker 2 tonight and it is my least favorite movie ever, there is no redeeming qualities, this movie is a complete piece of shit in every way. Awful script, terrible performances, everything looks so boring. A completely hollow movie. It hates everyone who buys a ticket.”
Having said that, not every review has been bad. One five-star review praised the film, saying: “It’s probably not for everybody. Those who have depth and have the ability to lose themselves in the story will love it. The acting was phenomenal.”
