‘Atypical’ Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

Atypical‘ has its incredible development story both in front and behind the camera. Created by Robia Rashid, ‘Atypical‘ follows the story of an 18-year-old Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), who is on the autism spectrum. The series debuted on Netflix on August 11, 2017, and received backlash for its lack of autistic actors and inaccuracies in its depiction of autism. The second season though was a much better improvement as Netflix hired autistic actors and writers to work on the show. This development was carried on to season 3, resulting in overwhelmingly positive reviews. Now that season 4 has arrived, some of you might be wondering if Sam’s story will continue beyond that. Let us discuss the possibility of the fifth season of ‘Atypical‘. Here is everything we know about ‘Atypical‘ Season 5.

Will There Be ‘Atypical’ Season 5?

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no, ‘Atypical’ season 5 is not happening at all. Netflix canceled the show after four seasons. Cancelations are always sad news, but at least the showrunners were given enough notice to give their characters the ending they deserve.

Some shows like ‘Cursed‘ ended after just one season and left us with a cliffhanger.

During its renewal announcement, creator and showrunner Robia Rashid expressed her sadness that the season is ending. However, she is grateful for the chance to tell the story.

“I’m thrilled we’ll be doing a season four of Atypical. And while I’m so sad to be nearing the end of this series, I am extremely grateful to have been able to tell this story,” Rashid said in a statement via THR.

“Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show. Thank you for being so open to Sam’s voice and stories and those of the entire Gardner family. It’s my hope that the legacy of Atypical is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view.”

When Will ‘Atypical’ Season 5 Release?

The fourth season of ‘Atypical‘ premiered on Netflix on July 9, 2021. It released ten episodes, just like the two seasons before it. ‘Atypical’ season 4 is the final run for the series. It is no longer returning for season 5.

What Could’ve Been The Plot Of ‘Atypical’ Season 5?

Since season 4 was already the series finale, it’s just about right that our characters get nothing but happy endings. However, those stories could always easily get picked back up without sacrificing the satisfying conclusions from season 4.

Season 5 could’ve always explored Sam’s life as a person of the spectrum, facing new challenges that come along his way. Aside from Sam, the fifth season could also explore what happens to the Gardners as they open a new chapter in their life. Sam’s father asks him to go on a trip to Antarctica to study penguins. That is awesome, considering how Sam is obsessed with them. We can already imagine the possible challenges that Sam and his family will encounter while living in a new continent. But since season 5 is no longer happening, all of those scenarios will only remain in our heads.
