3 Body Problem Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

While Alexander Woo, D.B. Weiss, and David Benioff may not have four hundred years to carry out their plan, they still have a massive undertaking in mind: May 2024 saw the confirmation from the co- creators of the Netflix science fiction series The 3 Body Problem that they are indeed hard at work on more seasons.

In the TV show, which is based on Cixin Liu’s Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem, a team of scientists must stop the extraterrestrial San-Ti from invading Earth. San-Ti has been traveling through space for 400 years to get here. Even though Earth’s sociopolitical climate is already polarizing, the aliens’ technological superiority makes the race against the clock far more pressing than a four-century timescale would indicate. Fortunately, the rest of us will only have to wait a few of those years to see how the story ends. The pressure is still on for Benioff, Weiss, and Woo, especially since the Netflix series is now nominated for an Emmy.

So far, this is what we know regarding 3 Body Problem’s second season.

Is “3 Body Problem” Season 2 Happening?

Yes. 3 Body Problem was renewed by Netflix on May 15, however the streaming service did not reveal if the show will receive a full season renewal or not. The streaming service instead announced in a news release that the series “will return for more all-new episodes.”

In a statement, Benioff, Weiss, and Woo expressed their excitement about the opportunity to bring this story to a grand finale. “We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”

Even before Netflix made any official announcements, Benioff, Weiss, and Woo were pushing forward with the project, giving the press hints here and there. Collider inquired about potential plans for a second season during the series’ March SXSW premiere, and Woo responded, “We’re doing it now.” Weiss elaborated, adding, “For season 2, we’ve got better than a rough idea. We’re much farther along with that plan than rough-idea stages.”

A few weeks down the road, the producers announced they had received the go-ahead for seasons 2 and 3. At the Netflix FYSEE space, a panel discussion hosted by the 3 Body Problem Television Academy made the formal announcement. “We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels] in season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in season 2,” Weiss said during the panel. “We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that.”

Who Will Be In The Cast Of “3 Body Problem” Season 2?

You can count on the ensemble cast to return with 3 Body Problem. (Or, at minimum, those whose characters made it through the first season.) Jess Hong, Eiza González, Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, Sea Shimooka, Liam Cunningham, Marlo Kelly, and Saamer Usmani are the actors who are most likely to play Jin Cheng, Auggie Salazar, Saul Durand, Sophon, Sea Shimooka, Tatiana, and Raj, respectively..

“I really hope that we get a season 2,” Hong told ELLE.com. “Because Jin Cheng is one of the coolest, juiciest characters I’ve ever played. But also I’ve read the books, so I know what’s coming. It would be awesome to have to justify those decisions and enter those worlds.”

When Is The Release Date Of “3 Body Problem” Season 2?

Benioff, Weiss, and Woo all expressed they want to work swiftly on season 2 in the same SXSW interview with Collider: They could start shooting before the end of 2024, should schedules align. Still, don’t expect a new chapter of 3 Body Problem before 2026. Added Weiss, the series is “a very labor-intensive show, and it doesn’t get less labor-intensive. It doesn’t get easier to make; it gets harder to make.”
