‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’ (Somari to Mori no Kamisama) is an anime adaptation series based on a fantasy manga series created by Yako Kureishi. The manga was adapted into an anime by Satelight and HORNETS and aired from January 9 to March 26, 2020. Fans have been anticipating season 2, but with the manga creator Yako Gureishi‘s current condition, is it still possible?
Here’s what we know.
Will There Be ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’ Season 2?
There is no season 2 renewal announcement yet, and there might be some bad news. The fate of ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit‘ season 2 is now uncertain after the Manga (on which the series is based) was canceled in December 2020. ‘Somari to Mori no Kamisama’ was serialized between April 2015 to October 2019. The abrupt cancelation was due to creator Yako Gureishi’s deteriorating health.
How Will The Cancelation Of The Manga Affect The Fate Of ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit Season 2?
As you may already know, anime adaptations are often produced to drive more sales for a manga series. The goal is to make an anime series popular so that anime fans will also buy its source material. Now that the manga series got canceled, there is a possibility that the series will no longer get renewed for season 2.
When Will ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’ Season 2 Release?
The fate of season 2 remains in peril, so we can not give an estimated release date yet. The anime was released on Crunchyroll from January 9 to March 26, 2020. We will have to continue waiting for more announcements.
Is There Enough Source Material For ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’ Season 2?
The manga series only has six volumes serialized, and the first season covered almost everything. With the manga now canceled, there is no longer enough source material for a follow-up season.
What Is The Plot Of ‘Somali and the Forest Spirit’ And What Could Happen In Season 2?
The 12-episodes-anime series follows the fatherly bond shared between a young girl named Somali and Golem, an ancient automaton protector of the forest. The anime is set in a world overrun by spirits, goblins, and all precarious creatures. The humans are in hiding and are already facing extinction. One day, Golem stumbles upon Somali in the forest. Golem ended up becoming Somali’s protector. Knowing that he only has one year to live, Golem tries his best to find the remaining humans so Somali can be reunited with them.
Episode 12 adapted Chapter 31 of Volume 6 of the manga series. The ending, though, is a little different from the source material. The final emotional scene shows Golem as he tries to leave Somali with Oni, only to recognize that he does indeed possess emotions. Assuming the series gets renewed, it will most likely adapt Chapter 32 and the rest of the remaining parts of the manga’s Volume 6. Chapter 32 sees Oni, Somali, and Golem arriving in a poor village. The people there befriended them and pleaded for Golem to stay and restore their forest.
